Volkswagen Celebrates Dakar Victory

Coming directly from the deserts of South America, Volkswagen is celebrating its second consecutive overall victory in the grueling Dakar Rally. To make the event even more monumental, trophy winner Nasser Al-Attiyah, from Qatar, is the first Arab to win the extreme desert rally in its entire 33-year history. Volkswagen, in stark contradiction to Mini, had a fantastic showing, as all four of their Race Touareg 3 teams finished the race and took four of the top six spots.

If you recall, the much hyped X-Raid Mini Countryman was in a big crash while doing some free time test runs, causing a minor head injury to driver Guerlain Chicherit. As a result, this helped clear the way for the Volkswagen victory. Sadly, the celebration couldn't be all fun and games as the event did take the life of a non-competing motorist. According to reports, an Argentinean Toyota team fatally slammed into the driver. Local officials are currently conducting an inquiry as to the exact cause.
