Legendary 1958 Porsche 356A Carrera GS Coupe to be sold in Auction

A painstakingly restored classic fifties Porsche Carrera Coupe will be auctioned in London this week.

The exotic 100hp 1.5-liter 'four-cam' four-cylinder racing engine officially dubbed "Carrera" after 550 Spyders' success at the 1954 Carrera Panamericana, first found its way into production via the 356. Two versions were offered in the coupe: the luxury street GS model and full racing GT. The latter is doubtless the preferred configuration for wheel-to-wheel racing, but for street use and modern rallies the GS variant is undeniably better suited given its fully-sealed glass windows, and proper sound-deadening seats.

The example being offered is one of the rarest and most desirable build specifications for a 356: 4-cam engine, matching numbers, period racing history, show-quality Silver Metallic exterior with carefully installed correct green interior, valuable Rudge wheels and factory sunroof. Over the years it has been meticulously restored by Porsche specialists European Collectibles and numerous marque experts, and RM Auctions in London expect this beautiful example to be sold for between £225,000 and £275,000 on Wednesday.
