According to some recent reports, the new Mazda CX-5 will be offered in Europe with a 2.2-liter turbo diesel that produces about 173hp and 310 lb-ft of torque. It would be mated to a new six-speed manual transmission. This new SkyActiv engine will also meet the strict Euro 6 emissions regulations that will be enforced beginning in 2014. The CX-5 crossover will be smaller and cheaper than the current CX-7 and CX-9.

Initially, the CX-5 was previewed as the Minagi concept at this year's Geneva Motor Show and featured Mazda's new Kodo design language. The new SkyActiv engine will make its US debut in the 2012 Mazda 3, which is equipped with a direct-injected 2.0-liter inline-four bolted to a six-speed automatic or a manual transmission. The new SkyActiv diesel is also supposedly designed to meet US regulations as well (catching the hint, Mazda?). The CX-5 is set to debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show later this fall and will go on sale in 2012 as an early 2013 model.
