If they actually used less fuel it might not. If businesses paid for the carbon output they might avoid some, say by making things closer to the consumer. Fuel economy regs don't encourage such options; instead they reduce consumption without change
The problem is that shipping costs will be raised and greatly effect everyone. It's not that people don't want better gas mileage.
Matt, how do you mean? In carbon terms I thought the USA was still no. 1 or 2 in total output and still near the top in per capita. (Australia is higher per capita I think :-( )
This is ridiculous! America is now one of the environmentally cleanest nations in the world. Why not crack down on developing countries without ANY form of EPA and zero emissions policies, instead of constricting America to the breaking point?

From here it seems strange USA has a system where basic healthcare costs can bankrupt people thru no fault of their own. Used to happen here but largely avoided for the last40 years & Aust spends less of GDP on health than USA. Cheers

Really, anything that he's signed in his term, so much had been rushed through that we're unaware of it's terrifying. Just take the time to read through any of it and you'll find discrepancies. I've read about 100 pages of the Obamacare bill myself

Don't worry, if they can charge more they will regardless of the R&d. Unfortunately, they will probably play with the rules to avoid the impact. Look how people substituted pickups/SUVs for cars - big V8s, lousy fuel economy but no gas guzzler tax.
Besides what bugs me the most about this is our government was NEVER intended to make laws that so dramatically affect the private sector. We take one step closer to socialism with every passing bill similar to this one.

Why not just charge for carbon & let the market do it's thing. Customers in the USA will move to using less fuel if they have to pay more for it. Even if you doubt global warming, it could reduce reliance on foreign oil & pay off some debt.

Or....and I'm just throwing it out there, drill more so these fuel economy standards can be put on a more reasonable timeline considering how hard up the economy is. Let the market deem what is wanted my the consumer, not the government.
