2013 Hyundai Veloster Turbo Rolls into Detroit

The new Veloster has finally been given some street cred with a new 201hp turbocharged sports-tuned engine.
The Veloster had a solid start when released last fall and in its first few months managed to outsell competitors such as the Scion tC and Honda CR-Z. The car's unique blend of funky styling, economy, and connectivity was an instant hit; yet given the sporty styling of the three-door, there seems to be a disconnect between the performance of the 1.6-liter Gamma four-cylinder and the car's racy looks. Such criticism has been quickly taken on board by Hyundai, and the turbocharged Veloster is their repost.

Packing a new 201hp 194lb-ft of torque version of the T-GDI engine courtesy of a twin-scroll turbo and unique motor-actuated wastegate, the power matches the pricier VW GTI and Mini Cooper S while offering a better weight-to-power ratio. The engine is paired to either a six-speed automatic or manual transmission and also benefits from a side-by-side intercooler and a stainless-steel exhaust system. Despite the extra power, the Veloster Turbo amazingly returns a best-in-class 27/38mpg city/highway.

The car's profile remains as is, save for new 18-inch alloys, while at the back the Turbo gains LED tail lamps and large round exhaust outlets that Hyundai claims has a throatier sound. There's also a new lower fascia with integrated diffuser and a pair of outboard reflectors. At the front, eight individual LED accent lights appear around the headlamps, and a hexagonal opening to replace the chrome-edge grille slot is bookmarked by new fog lights. The new Matte Gray exterior is not just for show, and is complemented inside by a Graphite Black interior with (or without) blue trim and special headliner graphics.
'Turbo' is stitched into the backrests of the standard heated seats plus the instrument panel has been enhanced with a pair of TFT screens in the gauge cluster. A standard 450-watt Dimension Premium Audio system with eight speakers, subwoofer and external amp also features, as does a rear-view camera and back-up warning sensors. The 2013 Veloster Turbo will arrive in the summer, with prices expected to start in the low 20s.
