Scion Racing Unveil 600hp FR-S Drift Car in Detroit

Scion has revealed its latest Formula DRIFT challenger packed with 600hp and awesome drifting potential.

Developed over the past year by the Scion Racing division and GReddy, a motorsports and tuning company, the new 600hp Formula DRIFT challenger has been unveiled this week at the 2012 Detroit Auto Show. It was always expected the 2013 Scion FR-S would be popular with drifters (the car-driving kind not the stinking hobo variety) and by creating a drift-ready variant, Scion are going to have plenty of new fans.

The 2.0-liter boxer-four produces 600hp and 500lb-ft of torque thanks to a spot of turbocharging, a massive 400hp and 346lb-ft of the stock version, and the drift car has been lightened by 300 pounds for added drifting capabilities. Piloting the car will be veteran drifter Ken Gushi, one of the drivers currently doing the business for Scion Racing in a heavily modified tC. It's worth noting that Toyota in collaboration with Gazoo Racing is also preparing a race car based on the GT 86, lending weight to the speculation that turbocharged production versions of the FR-S and GT86, and by extension the Subaru BRZ, could be in the pipeline.

Scion has also announced its special 'First 86' program, which gives 86 people the chance to be the first to own the Scion FR-S before the RWD sports coupe goes on sale to the general public in late spring.
