Spied: 2014 Mazda6

The development of the next-generation Mazda6 appears to be well underway.

Previewed as the Takeri Concept at the Tokyo Motor Show last December, the development of the new Mazda6 is well under way as these photos from the cold clearly show. This is an early test mule that combines the next model's platform together with a chopped up body of the current generation. The design of the new Mazda6 will have nothing in common with its current version and therefore won't look anything like this mule, but rather the beautiful Takeri Concept and its sleeker styling.

The new 6er will feature the new SkyActiv fuel saving technologies, including the SkyActiv-D Clean diesel engine, the new six-speed automatic transmission, and an engine idle-stop system. It will also be the first Mazda equipped with regenerative braking. The system converts kinetic energy into electricity during braking and stores it in capacitors for use later in powering electrical equipment such as the air conditioning, lighting and audio system. If development proceeds as planned, we should be seeing the production version debut next September at the Paris Motor Show.
