Volkswagen Polo R to Debut in Geneva

Volkswagen is apparantly set to unveil the turbocharged Polo R super mini hatchback at the yearly Swiss show, but it'll be for European drivers only.
Although it's still several months away, word is already leaking out that Volkswagen is planning to reveal the production version of its Polo R hot hatch at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show. The news comes courtesy of Autocar that's reporting that VW R&D chief Ulrich Hackenberg has confirmed the car's unveiling. The Polo R WRC Street concept that debuted at the GTI Treffen festival in Austria last year gives us a good idea of what to expect from the production, street-legal Polo R.

Expect to see a tuned version of the outgoing Golf GTI's 2.0-liter turbo four under the hood that'll produce somewhere in the neighborhood of 225 horsepower. A mechanical limited-slip differential is expected to help channel the power to the front wheels for an expected 0-62 time of about 6 seconds flat and a top speed hovering around 150 mph. The inspiration for the production Polo R reportedly came from the engineering team assigned to prep the Polo for its upcoming World Rally Competition debut. The WRC Street concept was their way of showing the VW brass what a roadgoing version could look like, planting the seed in the bean-counters' heads.
Since the standard Polo isn't offered in North America, chances are the R version won't either. Fortunately, Hackenberg did confirm that a new Golf R based on the recently revealed seventh-generation Golf is currently in the works, with an anticipated 276 horsepower (you know, give or take) and a targeted launch date sometime late next year.
