Cadillac ELR Headed for Production

Hybrid luxury coupe to enter production alongside the Chevy Volt late in 2013.
If you've ever been in a Toyota Prius or a Chevy Volt, you may have noticed the rather Spartan fit and finish. It's enough to turn off more upscale customers, but those looking for a luxury hybrid aren't being left out in the cold. Lexus and Fisker both offer purpose-built luxury hybrids, and soon Cadillac will be entering the game as well with the new ELR. Previewed by the dramatic Converj concept pictured here and based on the running gear in the Volt, the ELR luxury plug-in hybrid coupe has now been confirmed for production.

Production will take place at the same Hamtramck assembly plant in Detroit where the Volt is made and where, incidentally, the Cadillac Eldorado coupe was made until 1999. Confirmed to begin production late next year, we're expecting the production Cadillac ELR to offer improved performance and range compared to the Volt but carry a price tag considerably higher than the Chevy's $40k MSRP. Just how much more powerful, how much further it will travel and how much more expensive remains to be seen.
