BMW Reveals M3 DTM Champion Edition

To honor its DTM driver Bruno Spengler and his title-winning season, BMW will build this very limited edition M3 coupe.

Touring-car racing is growing in popularity around the world with series like V8 Supercars in Australia, Super GT in Japan, Superstars in Italy, and the British Touring Car Championship in the UK. But few of these series pack in the kind of action that DTM does in Germany. This year BMW returned to the series to take on Mercedes and Audi, and amazingly won all three championships (driver, team and manufacturer). That's a cause for celebration if we've ever seen one, and this is how BMW is celebrating.

Revealed at a small gathering at the Nurburgring to mark 40 years of BMW's M division (alongside the M6 Gran Coupe), this limited edition M3 is dedicated to Bruno Spengler, the Canadian driver who took the prize for the Bavarian automaker. Though BMW has yet to reveal any official photos or information, both have surfaced on the Bimmerpost forum. The M3 DTM Champion Edition features a Frozen Black paint job with M's signature stripes running up the roof, just like Spengler's race car. Other unique additions include special decals and door sills with Spengler's name and helmet design and his signature on the carbon-fiber dashboard.

Along with these cosmetic bits, the car also has the ZCP Competition Package that includes carbon fiber front splitters and rear spoiler, gloss black air inlets on the hood and special black wheels. Only 54 examples will be produced, each sure to carry a significant premium over the list price on a stock M3, but we wouldn't count on any of them making their way Stateside.
