BMW to Unveil X4 Concept in Detroit

We knew it was coming, it was only a matter of time. And that time will apparently come in January at the 2013 Detroit Auto Show.

BMW will unveil a near-production concept at the Detroit Auto Show in January previewing a new X4 model. According to AutoWeek, high-ranking BMW officials claim the compact crossover will be positioned against the upcoming Porsche Macan, with similar coupe-like styling and dimensions. Also on the radar are other luxury SUVs like the Range Rover Evoque. The all-wheel-drive X4 will share its monocoque steel platform, engines and underpinnings with the second-gen X3.

Differentiating it from the X3, however, it will boast individual styling to help justify the higher price tag of around $42,000. Think of the difference between the X5 and X6 and you're likely on the right track. Engine options have yet to be announced but should ape the four- and six-cylinder units found in the X3, including a 300-horsepower turbocharged 3.0-liter straight-six. M Performance and full-on X4 M models could also be in the cards, potentially to include the turbo six earmarked for the next M3. Whatever the motivation, the X4 is expected to be built in Spartanburg, SC, alongside the X3, X5 and X6.
