Maserati to Unveil Ghibli Sedan Next Year

The next step in Maserati's product offensive will be the Ghibli, rivaling the BMW 5 Series and Mercedes E-Class.

Maserati is on the rise with a massive new product offensive to transform the marque over the coming couple of years. It recently released the new Quattroporte, and we've already seen the Kubang concept version of its upcoming Levante SUV. But the next model in the pipeline, according to the latest reports, will be the new Ghibli sedan. Reviving a moniker made famous by the '60s-era coupe and convertible of the same name last used on a coupe in '90s, the new Ghibli will slot below the larger Quattroporte.

In that position, it will take on the likes of the BMW 5 Series, Mercedes-Benz E-Class, Audi A6 and Jaguar XF. Sources now indicate that the baby QP will debut sometime next year, likely at either the Geneva or Shanghai Motor Show. The jury's still out on what platform will underpin the Ghibli, with some sources expecting it will borrow its architecture from the Chrysler 300 and others speculating on a modified version of the Quattroporte's. Ferrari has been hard at work developing a new family of six- and eight-cylinder engines, with the possible use of forced induction, for Maserati, possibly to be bolstered by existing powertrains from the Fiat/Chrysler empire.

The new Ghibli is tipped to be built by Bertone old Grugliasco plant which Fiat acquired in 2009, allowing the main Maserati plant in Modena to focus on the GranTurismo and Quattroporte lines while production of the Levante will be handled by Jeep in the United States.
