Lexus Pilot Teases LFA Racer

Toyota's preparing a new racing version of the LFA. But where will it race?

The Lexus LFA is no stranger to racing. Even before development of the production model was complete, Toyota was already campaigning it at the Nurburgring in grueling endurance races, and has brought it back several times since. But this latest image suggests that the Japanese automaker could have something bigger in store for its supercar. Tweeted by Japanese racing driver Akira Iida, this image shows what appears to be an LFA racing car with a front splitter the size of a dinner table and an ever bigger rear wing undergoing wind-tunnel testing.

Iida has raced in the 24-hour endurance races at the Nurburgring and Le Mans, and set the Nordschleife lap record in the LFA with the Nurburgring package. But before that he was driving in Japan's Super GT championship, winning the title in 2002. Rumors suggest that Lexus could be preparing to field the LFA in the GTE category of the FIA World Endurance Championship, and that remains a possibility. But our guess is that this LFA is being prepped for the GT500 class of the Super GT series in its home market to replace the long-serving SC430 that currently makes up 12 out of the 30 cars on the grid.
