Mercedes Reveals SLS Black Series

AMG applies the Black Series treatment to its flagship Gullwing supercar, resulting in a stripped out, beefed up performance machine.
There's little question that Mercedes-Benz makes some of the best-driving cars on the market. But for those seeking an extra measure of excitement, there's the AMG line. Still, there will always be some for whom even a "standard" AMG will not suffice, and for those discerning customers, there's the AMG Black Series. The pinnacle of Silver Star performance, the Black Series treatment has been applied to the SLK, CLK, SL and C-Class coupe. But now Mercedes has taken the wraps off its ultimate performance model to date: the SLS AMG Black Series.

Based on the German automaker's flagship SLS supercar, the new SLS AMG Black Series adds a staggering array of upgrades to the already rapid Gullwing sportscar. Those include a revised version of the 6.2-liter V8 engine to boost output from 563 horsepower to 622, while torque is actually down from 480 lb-ft to 468. Driving through the AMG Speedshift seven-speed dual clutch transmission to the rear wheels and with a reduced curb weight, it can sprint to 62 mph in just 3.6 seconds and hit a top speed of 196 mph. Power and speed, impressive however, don't tell the whole story of the SLS Black, though. AMG has also added a substantial aero kit, for starters.
Derived from the GT3 racing model, it includes a big front splitter, side skirts, a fixed rear wing and an oversized diffuser, all made from carbon fiber. Wider tracks front and rear packing 20-inch forged alloys and carbon-ceramic brakes. A titanium exhaust helps the SLS shed 154 lbs off its curb weight, now down to 3,417. The chassis benefits from an adaptive suspension, electronic differential and carbon-fiber driveshaft. The stripped out interior loses the multimedia system for carbon trim and Alcantara. Revealed here for the first time, the 2014 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Black Series is expected to make its public debut at the LA Auto Show later this month.
