Alfa & Maserati Product Plans Detailed

Fiat has big plans for its Alfa Romeo and Maserati brands, and those plans include a whole mess of new products.

With the takeover of Chrysler now complete, Fiat is focusing its energies at home to revitalize both the Alfa Romeo and Maserati marques. But while other automakers seek to breathe new energy into their brands through marketing initiatives, Fiat is expanding both Alfa and Maserati with serious product offensives. Closely associated as these two brands are, several of their projects will be intertwined with one another. Where they differ is Alfa Romeo reaching more accessible segments and Maserati covering more upscale products.

The two Italian marques are collaborating on a new sportscar project we've reported on extensively. The mid-engined carbon monocoque chassis will lead to the Alfa Romeo 4C in both coupe and convertible forms with a turbocharged four-cylinder engine, and to the new GranSport for Maserati with potential six- and eight-cylinder turbo power. Another joint project revolves around the Maserati Ghibli, a version of which Alfa Romeo will apparently be getting as well as part of a two-pronged attack on the mid-sized luxury sedan market populated by the likes of the BMW 5 Series and Mercedes-Benz E-Class.

While the new sedan takes Maserati down-market, it takes Alfa up-market, Beneaht it Alfa is also developing a new B-segment model to replace the Mito, a new Giulietta (C-segment) and a new Giulia (D-segment), which itself will lead to crossover and wagon models as well. The Alfa product map also includes the new Duetto being developed jointly with Mazda's next MX-5, while Maserati will also get the new Levante SUV and a new GranTurismo. What is notably absent from the product plans is the rumored smaller SUV for Maserati, but since the plans only reach to 2016, that model could still be under consideration beyond Fiat's current four-year scope.
