Touring Superleggera to Debut 21st Century Alfa Romeo Disco Volante

Celebrating the 60th anniversary of the iconic Alfa, Touring will present their 21st century interpretation of the Disco Volante at Geneva.

First unveiled as a concept car back in 1952, the Disco Volante (Italian for 'flying saucer') is one of the most revered cars in Alfa Romeo's history. Back in 2010, RIAR (Registro Italiano Alfa Romeo), an association of more than 1500 vintage Alfa owners and fans from across the world, donated a bronze sculpture inspired by the 1900 Disco Volante to Alfa Romeo to celebrate its centenary. And just last month a replica of the car was up for auction at Bonhams in Paris.

Now, the Milan-based coachbuilder Touring Superleggera has created a modern-day version to celebrate the 60th anniversary of this iconic Alfa, which is set to debut at Geneva. Built on an existing Alfa, as per the original, Touring's craftsmen took an 8C Competizione chassis and constructed a bodywork of the fifties car using hand-beaten aluminum panels and carbon-fiber. The 8C's 450hp 4.7-liter V8 has also been used, as has the six-speed semi-auto transmission, double wishbone suspension and limited-slip differential.

The Disco Volante 2012 will be built in limited numbers according to Touring Superleggera, and we look forward to seeing live shots after its unveiling at Geneva this week.
