It has already been to the track you won't be disappointed. Go to DriveSRT.com and watch the video. The car is more powerful. Lighter more structural rigidity and more positive feeling steering. All this for the car that holds the Nurburgring record!
It's not bad in my opinion. Sure the taillights could use a little change, but they're bearable. To me, I don't really like the front end. I think the headlights and grill/bumper don't look right. Don't get me wrong they fit the lines, but it just isn't that Viper look. I guess it will grow on me eventually though.
I'm a Viper guy and so far so good but I need a track day with ZR1, GT-R and 458 before I can sing its praises. If I know the Viper team the way I think I know them, I don't think I'll be disappointed.
I'm glad they didn't change it. its still ugly and I won't like it by mistake. :)
I think it looks great. I love the side exhaust. My only issue is that I feel like it needs more of a rear fender-flare. The rear quarter-panel looks too flat. But I'd still gladly own one!
Don't like the corvette (callaway) style front end & headlights. Rest of it looks pretty gnarly for an American car
The only cars made with more horsepower per pound are the Bugatti Veyron and Ferrari F12berlinetta rare air especially since the Bugatti is turbo and the both cost 5 to 7 times as much.
The best way to make high horse and high torque from a naturally aspirated engine. Smaller displcement OHC engines make good horse but no torque unless externally pressurized.
You can't just look at hp per L. You have to look at ft/lbs of tq, valves per cyl. And wether or not it's naturally aspirated or pressurized externally. Torque gets you moving. Horsepower keeps you moving. large displacement OHV engines are........

@Tony the SLKs headlights are far more square than this. What creases in the front? Do you mean the vents in the front for the oil coolers and brakes? Or the hood vents for cooling and better air flow through the hood? Those aren't gimmicks

@dan. I should have said SLK headlights, I was trying to show viper a little more respect. Either way they look too feminine in that vertical form. But i still say the front is unoriginal with all the gimmicky creases.

no good signs of it ever happening. With the exception of LFA and to some extent the IS-F(Still isn't as good as the M3) Toyota hasn't really made sporty cars in recent years which is a shame because they used to make such great cars like the Supra

@Dylan... What's your point? It's well known that the 86 was engineered almost entirely by Subaru with exception of the fuel injection system. There have been rumors of Toyota coming out with a new supra since it ended production and there are still
confused with an Aston Martin. I would also suggest you look at an SLS again the headlights are a totally different shape than these.

@ Paul, they do a bit, but they keep the overall shape, and front lights, but add different lines as curves, tail lights etc... This to me is a new front, identical sides. And ugly rear... So pretty much they kept 1/3 things identical, the sides
Glad to see the double bubble roof! Also, pretty cool that they positioned the motor to the passenger side to create perfect balance with just one driver. The 49.5/50.5 weight distribution is gonna be a killer. Can't wait to see lap times!

Just a quick note as this comes up a lot and is the main thing that bothers me, OHV motors don't make more torque than OHC. The viper makes huge torque but that is down to its large capacity, and specifically large piston size.
@Bruce, The Bugatti Veyron is named after French racing driver Pierre Veyron, who won the 24 hours of Le Mans in 1939 while racing for the original Bugatti company. The 16.4 refers to 16 cylinders and 4 turbochargers. The engine is a 8.0 liter.
Bruce, you're wrong. The veyron motor is a 8.0L(aka 488 Ci or cubic inches this is the size of the motor) W16 that is quad turbocharged. The 16.4 is Bugatti marketing the cylinder count and 4 turbos. Usually yes the 1.x or 3.x is size. But not here.
You seriously can't be this dumb like seriously. I'm not being sarcastic. 16.4 is the size. Yeah it's a 16 cylinder and has 4 turbos but it's the size of the engine not the "description". So what you're saying that a 1.8l car has 1 cylinder and 8 turbos? Think about it look it up. I know I'm right and so does smart people who know about cars.
OHV engines: less parts, slower moving parts, compact, light weight, lower center of gravity (helps handling) compared to SOHC and DOHC, usually a great amount of torque, and parts are cheap. Just a few great things that OHV motors offer.
And the reason for pushrods still is clearly for producing mountains of torque. At LeMans the GTS-Rs were unrivaled accelerating out of corners. It WORKS.
Thats like saying, "Lamborghini is just a tractor company." Yes, V10 has humble roots but the original V10 was developed in conjunction with Lamborghini to make it suitable for this car. The only problem was that it used to sit too high in the bay

I usually say V8 because people usually don't know what VR type engine is. Even car magazines with sometimes call a vr6 a v6.
Two V8s sharing one crank is still a V16. Learn what a W-configuration is. Every pair of cylinders in the Veyron is staggered at a smaller angle so it can be packaged more tightly. A real V16 would be seriously long.

car that's a big deal because heat soak essentially causes you to lose power. A turbo system would add weight to the front of the car upsetting the balance. A NA car will usually have a smoother power delivery which makes the car more predictable.
As far as turbo's while they do add a significant amount of power they also reduce engine responsiveness causing delay in power delivery because the turbo maintain boost in order to make that power. Turbos are also more prone to heat soak on a track

Yes you can make a 4banger and turbo it up to 640 but is it reliable? How's your power and torque curves? I can answer that for you....they are shit. Big displacement = easy and reliable. Plus your power comes right away. And don't even suggest a tt v6 in a viper. That is just wrong.
Damnit Curtis, the Veyron carries an 8.0 w16. The Bugatti Royale carried a 12 litre engine, and it had the largest engine in a production car.
@Michael, 640 hp and 600 lb ft of torque from a ((N/A)) car is pretty impressive no matter who you are, I prefer N/A over turbo's anyway because it's pure, raw power without a crutch like a TT setup.
Anyone can turbo a car and get more power. Having that much power from an NA engine is very impressive.
This engine is for torque and alot of it and the 16.4 is cylinder count and number of turbos respectively this engine is much less peaky then a blown smaller displacement engine
@Carlos except this engine weighs about 200lbs less. This 8L OHV engine probably weighs less than most performance DOHC so I don't why you guys are complaining. The displacement might be big but the engine is really compact.

Yeah it definitely has the most torque of any N/A car, second on the list to this is the 1999 Mercedes-Benz CLK GTR. Just in case someone wanted to know.

The viper is just a corvette with a bigger engine making the same power and more outrageous styling. It would be better if they used all that engines potential.

Those fires were caused by an adhesive compound in the manufacturing and the cars were recalled. It would be embarrassing if SRT followed suit.
Hope we don't have any ferrari style engine fires. Cos a Mg firewall will near enough explode under high temperatures.
It is technically a front engine. However if you take into account how far back the engine sits in relation to the front axle it's truly a front /midship which translates to the higher rear weight bias. Plus diff and tank and 355s

Yea those things may be true but that's not always the reason for more weight in the rear. If you look at most regular cars weight balance it's mostly front.

In case anybody is wondering the old curb weight was 3460 and 3408 or the ACR. All in all power to weight ratio is 10% better than the old base model, 8.5% better than the ACR.
I have a couple minor problems with this design. One, the 90's GTS Viper style side vent. Two: the F12-esque styling overall. And three, the front overhangs which is a little too rounded. Luckily, I will easily overlook these minor faults, because

I'm a huge viper fan, and love this new rendition, but you guys are right. Squint a little, and it looks like a Calloway C12 Corvette (at least the silver modded viper does). Still love it though.
They've elongated the hood and changed the headlamps and body lines in such a way that I feel like the red one now shares a resemblance to a corvette. And being a corvette fan, that saddens me.

Gtr is a performance car. Viper is more of just huge engine in a frame. Like a go cart

This car is a performance monster. Now I do also like the GTR, but the experience you get from a Viper (in this case with the assists off) I just purely unreal. I would take this over a GTR any day. It is faster, meaner and more fun.
Also, the GT-R does absolutely nothing for me aesthically, while this makes me feel borderline unfaithful to my fiance
@Judah well for one, this is a driver's car. It's made to be hooned and enjoyed, the GT-R is a tech fest. The old one was faster on the track, so I'm putting my money on this one as well.

From this angle it literally looks like it crashed into a corvette. The back window and roof line starts to do something interesting but the rest is just ugly.

Glory be...a manual!! So glad there's no flappy paddle option on this, a Viper is all about the physical interaction between driver and car - anything other than manual just wouldn't be the same.

The new interior layout is just a bonus that comes with the bone jarring performance. Now they should go out to the Nurburgring and post a sub 7-minute lap time.
Definitely fits the msrp more so than the last gen vipers. Bravo srt, you really made a great car on paper and in pictures.
Viper interiors have always been simple. Everything you need a not much else. Ever been I. A first Gen Viper? This is a luxury hotel room with taliored made suites compared to a first gen Viper.
It's a viper. Simple is good. Nobody wants a busy interior. Sleek. Simple. Looks fantastic.
There's not much room between the brace and those covers. Does the V10 have solid mounts to reduce the torquing of the engine?
Is it just me, or does every alternator I see just looks ugly, dirty, and really old looking? Like on this one, I would expect it to look fantastic and clean because it is a brand new engine, but I think it just looks like it is dirty or something.
That's not a lot of plastic. The only plastic that is there is covering the headers. it probably has a heat shield under it. But still, it would be nice without it

you do realize that this is just the base viper and not the ACR? the last ACR held the lap record for a while and this will be faster. just imagine what the ACR will do. i wouldnt take it over the lambo or ferrari but definitely over the GTR or ZR1

@Patrick, one, you would be wrong that it is the fastest production car to lap the ring. The Radical SR8 LM holds that title. And two, it is "no biggie" anyone can make a car go fast. And off the ring I don't think is really has any world records...

@chad, I do agree that this is awesome car but there are cars with more impressive engines. to call this an engineering masterpiece would do injustice to other more impressive cars.

First Robbie, you can turn off the TCS. Second, they needed to keep the power suitable enough for street driving. That V10 can make a hell of a lot more power and potential buyers wouldn't be able to handle it.
Yes the viper has a big engine, but theres no other engine like it. Such unique sound and performance.

While I love this car it's not the same machine it once was. The name dodge is gone. All the fancy traction control, abs, and other crap is added. Great car just not as good as its predecessors.
You do realize this thing beats the "engineering masterpieces" by miles right? Fancy isn't always better. This thing is a monster. And it's going to keep giving the beat down to the much more expensive competitor.

and high liter to HP is so it dosent just eat tires up, it makes the power bands actually useable.. that's why ft cars have big liter engine but usually under 500 HP... its all about the curves
for how good the viper is it don't need more power, I drove an old one and my god what a ride all the torque and no stupid computer to tell it not to kill u. amazing ride and a great expierence... hopefully this one won't let us down
@ Michael. Nooo I know the torque is crazy good, most of any n/a engine. But the hp side I feel is a little on the lower end. I was just hoping for more around 700hp, especially with such a massive engine. But I'm still quite content with 640.
Ya and It also weighs less then pagani's 7.3L V12, Lamborhgini's 6.5L V12, and Bugatti's 8.0L W16 so...
The liter to BHP is a little low to be a masterpiece.

Because Dodge didn't want FIAT to be totally in charge of the development of the Viper, so they split up into two part, with subsequent brands. The part that needed saving (Chrysler, Dodge) and the part Chrysler wanted total control of (Ram Trucks and SRT).

Watched the unveiling video live it was awesome gave me sweaty palms and I'm a vette fan the viper deserves it's place though glad to see it back
It held the lap record with 40 less hp. Just imagine what it will do with all that tech and 40 more hp and 600 ft lbs.
Would have liked to see some more power but I'm still pleased with that amount.
