Official: 2013 Mercedes-Benz CLS Shooting Brake Released

Mercedes-Benz has just lifted the lid on their new CLS Shooting Brake.

Mercedes-Benz is bringing out a Shooting Brake version of their CLS for 2013. The new variant marks the culmination of the German's work, which we first got a glimpse of back at the 2010 Beijing International Auto Show when the company first revealed a concept of the shooting brake. The 2013 Mercedes-Benz CLS Shooting Brake, at first glance, appears to be more of a wagon than a true version of its namesake.

It does indeed have a long hood with narrow windows, however its roof isn't quite as dynamic and sloping as one would image a true shooting brake would have. According to Mercedes, they contend that "in terms of its proportions, the new CLS is quite clearly a coupe, but with five doors and a roof which continues through to the rear, it promises some remarkable new possibilities." The five doors were meant more for functionality than for fashion while a large tailgate underlines that point even further. In terms of motivation, a lineup of four engines (two diesel, two gasoline) have been made available for the 2013 CLS Shooting Brake.

The diesels include an entry-level 204hp 250 CDI BlueEfficiency plant and a more powerful 265hp 350 CDI BlueEfficiency engine. The gasoline engines available are the 350 BlueEfficiency 3.5-liter V6 rated at 306hp and 273 lb-ft of torque and the top-of-the-line 500 BlueEfficiency 4.6-liter biturbo V8, good for 408hp and 442 lb-ft of torque. The latter can propel the CLS Shooting Brake from 0-62mph in 5.3 seconds and reach and reach an electronically-limited top speed of 155mph.
