Fiat 500L Debuts with World's First In-Car Espresso Maker

The second member of the "500 Family" features offers more space and a hot cup of coffee.

Fiat has a real success on its hands with the 500. Sure, some American dealers might beg to differ, but in other markets, the retro city car has sold like hot cakes. The thing is that a lot of people who want a Cinquecento also need more space. So at the Geneva Motor Show just a few months ago, Fiat rolled out the new 500L. Part of the expanding "500 Family", the 500L is a minivan that looks something like a Mini Countryman. In launching the 500L, however, Fiat introduced a new feature we've never seen before.

Inside the 500L's cockpit sits an espresso-maker developed specifically for Fiat by Italian coffee company Lavazza. It uses Modo Mio pods and can brew your coffee during your commute instead of having to take it with you from home, wait until you get to the office or stop somewhere along the way. The coffee machine isn't the only innovative feature in the 500L, though. There's also a sound system by Beats Audio (the popular electronics brand from American rapper Dr. Dre) and a folding table that fits into the spacious, best-in-class interior that offers more space than the three-door hatchback it joins in the line-up.

Buyers can chose from an array of efficient engines including two gasoline engines (a 105-horsepower 0.9-liter TwinAir and a 95hp 1.4) and an 85hp 1.3-liter MultiJet2 turbodiesel, soon to be joined by a methane-fueled Natural Power engine. Built at Fiat's plant in Kragujevac, Serbia, the Fiat 500L will be available for order in the next few months and should arrive in American dealerships by early 2013.
