Honda Ponders Fit Little Crossover

Honda is looking to move ahead with new sub-compact crossover based on next-gen Fit/Jazz.

Honda is reportedly considering a compact SUV based on the upcoming next-generation Fit, also known as the Jazz outside of North America. This according to Automotive News, which states that a new Fit-based crossover positioned below the CR-V would help the Japanese carmaker sell more than one million units off that single new platform alone. Currently Honda sells 800,000 units annually based on the Fit platform, including the hatchback, City sedan and Freed mini-MPV reserved for Japan.

The redesigned Fit should hit US showrooms next year, and while a new crossover would help Honda gain a foothold in the ever-growing compact SUV sector, there's no guarantee it will make it Stateside. The refreshed 2013 model will be arriving at dealer lots any day now, and when it does, an all-new color called Midnight Plum Peal will be introduced in place of Orange Burst Metallic. Everything else, including its 117hp 1.5-liter i-VTEC four-pot and $15,325 starting price, remains untouched. Photos are of the 2012 Honda Fit.
