Comments - Biggest Automotive Missteps: Chevrolet SSR

Published: Jul 23, 2012
Description: If there's one common theme throughout this series, it's cars which have been built even though their makers should have known better. The story of the SSR therefore begins with the Plymouth...

I driven this car or truck what ever you would like to call it and can say while the V8 had lots of power and it was okay to drive I tend to agree that there are other places car companies can spend there money like finding ways to make cars and trucks less exspensive! You can buy a real nice car these days without spending $35,000. Also they should keep working on the clean energy vehicles as wel...
David Guerrero Jul 25, 2012
It did have good quality, but everything else was horrendous, especially the interior, cheap plastic that cracks and beaks within days of purchase
Greg Lewis Jul 24, 2012
The prowler was one sexy car (and as for power plant as patrick mentioned, they are swapping hemis in them now) hhr, can't fix ugly. Think GM was a dollar short and a day late to the new "retro" thing. Chrysler had that market tied up for years.
Josh ?hompson Jul 24, 2012
Maybe a misstep, but still one of ny favorites
Cody Fullerton Jul 23, 2012
I was waiting for this one...
Ryan Spencer Jul 23, 2012
Have always hated this car
Tin Nguyen Jul 23, 2012
Companies that make hard top convertibles should look into this design for space saving. The roof slide downward in a ventricle position instead of sitting in the trunk.
Matt Piccolo Jul 23, 2012
Yea I think this may be the ugliest truck I the 20th century... Or ever
Brady Fereday Jul 23, 2012
Did this have the corvette motor in it?
Paul Trahan Jul 23, 2012
Johnny, I was so prepared to buy the G8 ute, until Pontiac closed it's doors. I ended up getting a G8 GT.
Phillip Greene Jul 23, 2012
i never really knew much about ssrs but after readingbthis article i actualy have a new found respect for them and with a few minor alterations to the front end it could have been a very bad truck
Johnny Hoover Jul 23, 2012
I like the ssr and my dad liked the ssr you could always make it look more aggressive in the front. I was really hoping Pontiac would have made it one more year to bring us the g8 ute. Not everyone want to drive the same car as everyone else.
chikenbag Jul 23, 2012
@patrick- i was about to say the same thing...
Jake Marra Jul 23, 2012
Because no dealership wants to buy one and ruin their rep
Abraham Mendoza Jul 23, 2012
I don't think they made SSRs and Prowlers in mass numbers. I've never seen them for sale in used dealerships or anywhere else for that matter.
Garrett Carpenter Jul 23, 2012
I am so glad to see this vehicle as part of this series. I hate the SSR with a fiery passion.
Frederick Jason Ray Bautista Jul 23, 2012
Dont ever compare supercars to muscle cars as they are way too different. And yes cheap cars that sells in small numbers are a flop
Patrick Schalk Jul 23, 2012
It at least had a good powerplant but I never really liked the looks. Whereas the Prowler had a crappy powerplant but looked amazing. I'd love to have a Prowler one day.
Bruce-Almighty Tumblin Jul 23, 2012
I never did like the SSR, I thought it was UGLY; witch led to it getting pulled!
Jose Miguel Fernandez Jul 23, 2012
No, super cars sell on small numbers because there isn't a lot of people that have or are willing to spend a million dollars on a car, while economic cars are supposed to sell in large numbers like the ssr. So yes it is a flop
Jarod Forsythe Jul 23, 2012
I love the prowler and the Ssr!! So, since things that sell in small numbers are flops I'm guessing most supercars are flops.. sorry for bursting your bubbles.
David Pires-Ihsaan Jul 23, 2012
Pt cruiser..? Retro style that didnt really catch on..
Achmed Mabulela Jul 23, 2012
Plain ugly, only in the US I guess....
Abraham Mendoza Jul 23, 2012
Ha, not funny. Come on Carbuzz, just cause cars don't sell in Camry numbers doesn't make them failures.
Jack Howard Jul 23, 2012
No it stands for Super Sassy Rapists Zach. Get your facts straight.
Zachary Maurer Jul 23, 2012
And ssr stands for super sport rally, (or so im told) but I think most people know that on here.
Zachary Maurer Jul 23, 2012
No carbuzz!!! My uncle has one and it's the best!!!! Lol, Idc, it is a cool car/truck/convertible/?
Jim Nguyen Jul 23, 2012
It reminds me of a vw Beetle mixed with a Chevy Colorado
Wyatt Gordon Jul 25, 2012
still much rather have this than that hideous, yampy, smeggy iranian Caterpillar shit
Zach Sullivan Jul 24, 2012
IMO they went to far back as far as body style this probably would have done a whole lot better if they went with a late 60's el comino rather then a 50's style pickup
Read Mills Jul 24, 2012
Sorry guys. I have been seeing all the campaign commercials and it made me think of this as a backdrop. I just thought it would be a funny background for a campaign ad. That's all.
Patrick Schalk Jul 24, 2012
I hate when people get political about something that isn't even remotely about politics.
Abraham Mendoza Jul 23, 2012
That has nothing to do with this truck. He didn't command that they build it.
Joe Fats Harper Jul 23, 2012
He was saying that Pres. Obama saved this car company..
Wolfgang Ezeh Jul 23, 2012
@Read what has Pres. Obama got to do with the discussion on here?
Theviper007 Jul 23, 2012
my niehbor has this car
Jordan Clegg Jul 23, 2012
Same engine from the corevette at the time.
Miguel Jimenez Jul 23, 2012
@Nicholas they did have V8's
Nicolas Blake Mullen Jul 23, 2012
Wait, I thought they had a V8. Nvm
Nicolas Blake Mullen Jul 23, 2012
I think the ssr is unique. Plus it had a sweet engine In it
Read Mills Jul 23, 2012
Can't you just see Pres. Obama in front if the car saying "I saved one of the biggest car companies on the planet. With billions of taxpayer dollars they have built such amazing machines like this..."

That's the reason why US automakers collapsed, they were making cars just to say "we're making cars".The quality was shitty so where the designers. Look what kind of cars they make huge cars that take out two lanes it's so bad that even fiat took sal
Dale Schroeder Jul 23, 2012
To be fair, the Plymouth brand was so damaged by badge engineering at that point that a specialty car like the Prowler never really had a chance. Even Plymouth branded Neons were selling pretty terribly at that point.
Matt Piccolo Jul 23, 2012
No wonder they didn't sell.., I can think of so many other cars I'd buy before this at that price
Brady Fereday Jul 23, 2012
I saw one sell at a mecum auction for 18 or 20 if I remember correctly
Zachary Maurer Jul 23, 2012
I really don't think gm was going for big numbers, originally it was suppost to be a limited run car, they mass produced it l8r and needed to break even with the amount it cost to build
Clayton Corley Jul 23, 2012
Ikr I thought they were only about 15,000-22000
Dylan Bruder Jul 23, 2012
What a ripoff never knew they were that much

I dont want to start an argument and i dont realy know much about this car too, dont you guys agree having a smaller, weaker engine would inprove MPG? If somone realy wanted a "retro" truck they could restore one, this is more for the daily driver.
Greg Lewis Jul 24, 2012
Forget the 4.7, swap that 392 in there!
Paul Lissona Jul 24, 2012
We had a 2000 Dakota with a 4.7 and it was a great engine for that small truck.
Patrick Schalk Jul 24, 2012
Dodge still makes the 4.7. It's offered in the Ram ST trucks.
Nick Pietropaolo Jul 23, 2012
@Miguel.really?? dodge doesn't make a 4.7???? I'm not a mopar guy but I do know for a fact that was a very common production motor for the durangos and the ram back in the late 90's - mid'00's. do ur research before u post
Christo Savaides Jul 23, 2012
Both the PT Cruiser and the HHR were less radical in their styling and much more practical.
Dillon Dixon Jul 23, 2012
The PT Cruiser and the HHR have sold very very well. PTs are just now becoming less common. I see HHRs all the time.
Christo Savaides Jul 23, 2012
Who are you kidding? The sales of all of these retro cars were abysmal because they were ugly. The average consumer doesn't buy a car because of the power plant. They buy it because it looks good and it's practical. These were neither.
Miguel Jimenez Jul 23, 2012
@Jordan you're mistaking block size for displacement size, just because a 4.7L has a small bore it doesn't necessarily mean it a small block.
Miguel Jimenez Jul 23, 2012
4.7L from what? Dodge doesn't make a 4.7L V8. The 6.1L hemi fit just fine, some guy did it look it up on YouTube.
Jordan Jackson Jul 23, 2012
I hear ya Chris, the 4.7l could have worked, it's not huge
Chris Penza Jul 23, 2012
Prowler's are actually pretty sweet. If only they found a small v8 to fit inside
chikenbag Jul 23, 2012
honestly, they are both crap, but the hhr is soooo much better looking. the copy is better than the original lolz
Andrew Palmer Jul 23, 2012
The hhr was designed by the same person(Brian Nesbit) that did the pt...so it's more of a cousin than a ripoff.
Shane Carroll Jul 23, 2012
Yet they had no problem producing a blatant rip-off of the PT Cruiser with the HHR
Braydon Pack Jul 24, 2012
It's like tuning a Prius it's still just a hideous SSR
Andrew Hossann Jul 23, 2012
Now you're thinking
Bailey McLendon Jul 23, 2012
Imagine all of the subwoofers you could fit in there...
Kyle McCullough Jul 23, 2012
Might look decent with better wheels
Dan Marino Jul 23, 2012
This one is really nice. Love the red/black two tone and the wheels
James Paquette Dec 31, 2012
Loved these I want another one!
Trav Rowan Jul 28, 2012
@ Dillion, perhaps you should google or YouTube Holden SS utes. They ALREADY do what you might call a pick up and us Aussies call a ute using the SS and have so for quite a long time. Perhaps CARBUZZ should do some Aussies write ups on some of our unique cars
Jackson Bond Jul 26, 2012
I neglect to see how a new elcamino based of a fwd impala would be cool.. Will its v-tech go bwah like the ridgeline? And gm already makes one it's called the maloo and it's a Holden
Danny Reed Jul 24, 2012
I drive past this car in this color scheme every day. The owner lets it sit outside because he has no garage. I always hope there can be a major hail storm over it or something lol
Keenan Casteel Jul 23, 2012
Looks like an obese Tramontana!
Cody Fullerton Jul 23, 2012
El caminos are some of the most fun cars to drive ever. They have zero weight over the rear end so you can flick it out in a heartbeat
Justin Brest Jul 23, 2012
I don't want to but I like it!
Abraham Mendoza Jul 23, 2012
Yeah it was radical project. I'm glad GM went for it, they wouldn't do that today.
Adam Page Jul 23, 2012
I always liked these. It kinda has an old school approach to a futuristic truck. If I had to drive a pick up, I would get one...
Dillon Dixon Jul 23, 2012
@Miguel Yes I know, just wanted to tell him that it hasn't always been based off of a chevelle. So there isn't a reason to bring a chevelle back.
Chris Penza Jul 23, 2012
Don't bring back the el camino. It was both a wannabe pickup truck and muscle car. The only good thing about it is the engine
Miguel Jimenez Jul 23, 2012
@Dillon they were based off of impalas up until 1964, then in 1965 they based off of Chevelle's .
Cearbhall Beggan Jul 23, 2012
If they put headlights on the back and swivelled the seats, this would be a slick rear-engined suicide-doored coupe!! (the rear wheel steering and 5 reverse gears we can fix later!)
Dillon Dixon Jul 23, 2012
@jordan The first gen El Caminos were based of the impala. If they based a new one off of the upcoming SS chassis, it would be amazing.
Jordan Jackson Jul 23, 2012
@Andrew: they'd have to revive the chevelle for that since thats what the el camino was based off of
Andrew Hossann Jul 23, 2012
Bring back the el camino with the camaro face and power
Aislin Cooper Jul 23, 2012
One of the ugliest vehicles ever
John Serely Jul 23, 2012
Same here, dillon!
Dillon Dixon Jul 23, 2012
I personally love these! I think it was a brilliant idea and I'm glad GM went through with it.
Craig Lafey Jul 23, 2012
Idk how i feel about these. I'm a chevy guy and these things are interesting and unique. I've seen 2 around my town and they do turn heads but idk about them. Guess I should look more into them.
chikenbag Jul 23, 2012
it does have a dumb face... fun as hell to drive though...
Joshua Rutkowski Jul 23, 2012
It has that kind of face that makes you wanna go up to it and just punch the crap out of.
John Serely Jul 23, 2012
These look great in yellow IMO
Dillon Dixon Jul 23, 2012
I would love to have one sitting next to our 41' Chevy pickup. That would be so amazing.

Oh the GTO fail... Now there's a misstep if I've ever seen one! Was so excited for the release of that car, I got on the list. After seeing the fail that it was, I canceled my order and got a camaro instead.
Kyle Smith Jul 24, 2012
No it still wasn't good power, the 1998 M5 made 400hp from a 5.0 V8. And it was a luxury four door sedan that still weighed less than this 2 seater.
Zachary Maurer Jul 24, 2012
Ohh wait 8-10 even better, back then that was good power from a v8
Zachary Maurer Jul 24, 2012
@ervis, you also have to remember that this was 6-8 years ago too
Abraham Mendoza Jul 23, 2012
@Ervis: This isn't no supercar its a truck that has to last daily drives and loads. Think before you say.
Nick Pietropaolo Jul 23, 2012
@ervis. that 5.3l is very mild in every way from the factory. they have 6 bolt mains and the bottom ends can withstand 1000+hp no problem
Ervis At Jul 23, 2012
V8 5.0 300 hp ahahhaahahah FAIL
Bert Kelly-Johnston Jul 23, 2012
... Fail due to the tariff protection given to pick-up manufacturers in the USA. I've never understood why the protection is required, or for that matter why the UAW has appeared to oppose GM making money importing a few cars/utes. Anyone know?
Bert Kelly-Johnston Jul 23, 2012
Cory; no problem, the GTO/Monaro was based on the previous model Commodore & there was a utility version of that Commodore & a Maloo variant of that ute. There have been repeated reports of proposals to export Holden Tues to the USA but they fail due
Cory Poteet Jul 23, 2012
Gonna call myself out on my mistake before anyone else does..... Maloo's are built off the zeta chassis(G8 Camaro Commodore)....not the monaro/gto chassis
David Liebe Hart Jul 23, 2012
RIP "GTO" such a cool car
Cory Poteet Jul 23, 2012
Kinda funny they brought up the GTO...Holden already built a "ute" off that chassis(maloo) why didn't GM just rebody that instead of building this boat anchor off the big trailblazer?
Description: This produced 390 horsepower and had the option of a six-speed manual transmission. Unfortunately, this proved to be too little too late, especially when considering the SSR's biggest engineering...

Camaro is about 700 lbs lighter, but I get your point
Miguel Jimenez Jul 23, 2012
@Paul haha true. GM needs to drop some fat off that big boy!
Paul Trahan Jul 23, 2012
Pffft, the modern Camaro is nearly as heavy.
Johnny Hoover Jul 23, 2012
Really that heavy? Srt10 pickup is the most gas thirsty production vehicle ever!
Cody Andree Jul 23, 2012
Yes srt10 is still king. But I believe the UtE is faster.
Stephen Tyler Learn Jul 23, 2012
Ass not SSS stupid phone
Stephen Tyler Learn Jul 23, 2012
The ls2 six speed is the most bad SSS truck you can buy
Abraham Mendoza Jul 23, 2012
Ooo, that V8 and manual tranny seems like a decent combo.
Abraham Mendoza Jul 23, 2012
The prowler wasn't fast, wasn't useful but it was fun and unique. Same with any convertible. It's just unique to see and fun to look at.
Zachary Maurer Jul 23, 2012
@tom, well my uncle does, and he loves it, he takes it out for a drive every once and a while, and it's plenty fast for DDing, it's not like this was made for the track
Zachary Maurer Jul 23, 2012
@scott, yes it is a retractable hard top with a v8 people, it's going to be heavy, plus this was a few years before aluminum frame and carbon fibre came into play with a lot of cars
Scott Harrington Jul 23, 2012
It's so heavy because it has metal folding everything. That's a lot of mechanics.
Chris Penza Jul 23, 2012
@Cory he's too embarrassed to be seen in such an ugly car
John Serely Jul 23, 2012
I really like them, I would not mine owning one, especially the 6-speed. As long as it has a normal paint job, id be happy to own one (I have seen plenty of ones with hideous flames or stripes etc.)
Dillon Dixon Jul 23, 2012
I think it's incredible! It's so one of a kind. I would own one in a heartbeat of I got the chance.
John M Weishahn Jul 23, 2012
Sorry, but no one that young has ever driven an SSR. They are for old white men who think they can look cool for the low, low price of their own credibilty. This car can only impress people who know nothing about cars.
Dan Marino Jul 23, 2012
I agree Abraham. It is...different and a futuristic kind of take on the el camino. It may only appeal to certain people
Cory Poteet Jul 23, 2012
Why is the driver wearing a horse/stig costume?
Abraham Mendoza Jul 23, 2012
I like it a lot. It always catches my gaze when I see then. You're lucky Zach.
Jack Howard Jul 23, 2012
Then your Uncle must make a lot of irresponsible descisons.
Zachary Maurer Jul 23, 2012
This is the One that my uncles looks like
Chris Penza Jul 23, 2012
I used to like these when I had gran turismo 4 and I would drive it off road all day
Dillon Dixon Jul 23, 2012
Mmmm Chevelle SS. You sexy thing.
Andrew Palmer Jul 23, 2012
Looks like a bar of soap...I liked them the time...now not so much.
David Pires-Ihsaan Jul 23, 2012
It looks really cool, but it didnt really have a niche.. I called it a cruckvertible when I was younger..
