Donkervoort D8 GTO Production is Imminent

And people say the Dutch are only good at riding bikes.

For those who are unfamiliar with them, Donkervoort is a small Dutch automaker who specializes in hand-built, ultra-light weight sports cars. Founded back in 1978, they only produce a small number of vehicles per year, but their fortunate owners fully understand and appreciate the company's motto of "No Compromise". Powered by turbocharged Audi engines, some of the automaker's previous releases included the D8 and D8 GT.

But back in 2011 at the Geneva Motor Show, Donkervoort revealed their latest offering, the D8 GTO. Powered by an Audi 2.5-liter five-cylinder TFSI engine that produces more than 340 horsepower and 331lb-ft of torque (a 400hp model will also be available), we're hearing word today from GTSpirit that testing has nearly been completed and production is about to begin. The D8 GTO shares only five percent of its predecessor's parts due to the company's desire to shave the car's weight. This has been done by modifying the Audi engine with a new intake manifold which saves about 66 pounds.

In addition, the D8 GTO also benefits from new manufacturing techniques involving its chassis and doors, making the car better able to handle impact forces. Expect for it to go from 0 to 62 mph in three seconds and will carry a price tag over the €100,000 mark. Its top speed and other performance result will be revealed just ahead of its official launch this fall. According to GTSpirit, however, 19 of the first 25 units have already been reserved.
