With a fifteen percent weight reduction and twice the power, this track-only MX-5 will surely turn a few heads.
MX-5 has a well-earned reputation for being the consummate drivers' car, however Jota Sport has taken the iconic roadster and elaborated on it further with even more power and an even further reduction of weight. The MX-5 GT4 racer is currently available for order and it is eligible for both British and European racing series like GT and GT4. It isn't, however, street legal but reading through its specs, this thing should easily hold its own on the track.
The Mazda MX-5 GT4 is powered by a 320-horsepower 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder unit which is, essentially, twice as powerful as its street-legal 158-horsepower base car. Mated to a six-speed sequential gearbox with paddle shifters, the ultra-light racer can sprint from 0-62mph in only 3 seconds and reach a top speed of 160mph. The new Mazda racer weighs in at 2,200lbs (roughly 385lbs lighter than the standard on which it is based) and has been stripped of unnecessary features, a standard conversion for race-spec autos.
Carrying a price tag of £125,000, the MX-5 GT4 arrives ready to go with a fully-prepped shell, FIA-spec roll cage, front splitter, rear diffuser and rear wing along with carbon fiber doors. Carbon fiber bits have been installed on the interior as well to save weight, coming in the form of a new dashboard and center console. "The car is an easy car to race and would even suit track day enthusiasts. We are still developing the car, but we are now at a point that we can offer this car to customers safe in the knowledge that it is going to be a front runner in any GT4 field," said Jota's managing director Sam Hignett.
