All-New Smart Fortwo Coming in 2014

A new Smart car is in the works, and our intrepid spy photographers have spotted the test mule undergoing road testing.

Everyone's favorite punching bag of a city car is coming back with an all-new version slated for the market in 2014. The test mule of the miserly motor seen here looks significantly changed and updated for its next-generation build, with a debut expected for the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show. Built in conjunction with Renault, the new Fortwo will also arrive on the market under the French automaker's nameplate, with some Renault-influenced design touches apparently integrated.

Some changes to the styling for the 2014 model include new headlights and taillights, with the latter switching from a vertical configuration to a horizontal setting. The Fortwo's signature sideblade appears to have been axed, while the grille appears to have been changed as well. How much of these changes come down to camouflage or subterfuge remains somewhat murky, however we expect to find out more as the next-generation Smart car nears production. Smart's new model is expected to pack a range of efficient gasoline and diesel engines, while a fully-electric variant is also tipped to be in the cards when it is officially released.
