Audi Teases RS5 Pikes Peak Racer

Celebrating 25th anniversary of Pikes Peak record, Audi has a little surprise up its sleeve.

25 years ago, legendary Audi racer Walter Rohl headed to Pikes Peak with the original Audi Sport Quattro S1 and set a record for the fastest time up the dirt path. The hillclimb road was later paved, and Rohl's record stands to this day. Audi is planning to celebrate the event by reuniting Rohl, the S1 and the Peak at this year's event, which was postponed due to wildfires in Colorado. But it looks like that isn't all the German automaker has in store. On its Facebook page earlier today, Audi USA released the teaser image you see here.

The depicted vehicle appears to be based on the RS5, but prepared specifically for Pikes Peak. The roadgoing RS5, as you know, is based on the A5 coupe, only with a 4.2-liter V8 engine driving 444 horsepower through a dual-clutch Quattro transmission to all four wheels. The A5 DTM racer pictured at right also packs a V8, but with 456 horsepower and a six-speed sequential transmission, designed to compete in DTM touring car series in Germany. Without those regulations in place, who knows what Ingolstadt might have in store. Although if the teaser shot is any indication, we shouldn't be expecting the extreme wings seen on other Pikes Peak racers.
