Because electric is, yes efficient, but when driving long distances they're impractical. Charging times are unrealistic and isn't suitable for daily commuting.
finally! a seemingly fun car to drive that gets 70mpg or better! Sure beets the karma!
A 1.5litre turbo 3 cylinder with 200+hp is fantastic. I'd like to know the torque number tho.
Question: how is it consuming 20mpg, when it is "in pure electric mode" ? Pure electric implies no gas combustion, so where is the gas consumption coming from?
Haha Jamie. That is not the point of this car, it is a GT car! Not a supercar! It is not all about speed, it is about comfort, styling and MPG, too!
@Jamie, this is not suppose to be a super car. It's a car that is trying to be ridiculously fuel efficient and have GT performance. People get caught up in bhp and 0-60 times too much. Not every car is trying to be the fastest for its price.
Yay! My wrx will smoke this $100k plus "supercar" no way it will get 80 mpg. Apparently hybrids can claim any mpg they want with no ramifications when they don't hit that high number

Some people will buy them more as a novelty item or as "fanboys" but these likely won't sell as well as the competition. Great way for BMW to do some technology development though!
The m3 gets to 60 quicker than 5 seconds... That's a pretty sad time if they think this is competing with the r8, sls etc...
People paying enough to buy an R8 doesn't care about saving $200-300 a year on gas but they will care that a 25k WRX can hit 60mph faster than them. People only drive cars like this a few k miles a yr. @3k miles per year you use ~75 gallons less...

@Janak, there's 2 very good reasons they're never building the Gina. 1, It would be hellishly expensive to repair if you crash it, with the flexible bodywork and all, and 2, The reason its named Gina is because the way the engine cover opens, looks a bit like the body part the name "Gina" is probably short for

i hate being so young. by the time I'll be able to afford them, all super cars will be stupid hybrids or electric. the rumble of a v8 or the scream of a v12 will be a thing of the past..... sucks.
Still, i agree with darrel. why not use a turbo four pot, lighten the car a bit by taking out the hybrid technology, and focus on handling. And lower the price still. BMW isn't building this car for performance. They are building it to achieve "green" status.
It's the first in a series of truly efficient sports cars. More will come, and less expensive.

Aaron said it perfectly. as long as the car is still exciting, fast, and good looking, there's nothing wrong with an electric motor or two. its only bad if the company goes down Prius road, which is the polar opposite of those qualities I mentioned
I have an open mind, but the cost/benefit ratio for most hybrids just isn't there...until you factor in smug..then well I guess you could twist the numbers any you want....but I will hold judgement til we see one one the road.
Umm has anyone heard of a 918? its also a hybrid. Why are there so many close minded and jaded people on here. It's pretty sad really! Have an open mind you may learn something new and exciting that would have otherwise.

Cool car, but to put in the R8/SLS sports car category is a bit of a stretch. Very impressed with the MPG tho.
