Description: What makes something a supercar and not just a sports car? A difficult question, but necessary if we're going to say it's the first American supercar. Perhaps it's the Shelby Cobra, or ...Add Comments131
Clay WilliamsSep 26, 2012 Oh I know about the hood I was more thinking engineering wise.
John SerelySep 25, 2012 @clay to answer your question, the GTS had a different hood
Drew StorrustenSep 25, 2012 @zach, I've been having the same problem. And @ben, yeah if ford can just put the IRS in their new gt500, I would love to see the lap times against the Camaro. But against the ZR1 vette, idk how well it'd do. I'm skeptic of that one.....
Ben KnorrSep 25, 2012 agreed. they need to bring back the IRS. Hopefully being out performed in a track setting by the ZL1 will help sway them in that direction.
Drew StorrustenSep 25, 2012 Well idk if you wanna count the 1000 horse super snake, but unless mustang can liven up the suspension to handle the 700 horse then they won't be able to take it to the track in a very outstanding way. I seriously wanna see it with IRS. Nothing else.
Ben KnorrSep 25, 2012 An ACR version of this viper is sure to be everybit as hardcore as the old one and would destroy the current ZR1. Lets hope GM ups the ante with the C7 ZR1. Who's gonna be the first to hit 700hp? Mustang probably haha
Miguel JimenezSep 25, 2012 I went to go look it up and they're keeping the OHV design.
Zeus MochaSep 24, 2012 Haha clay it's nurburgring, unless there is a Nuremberg, which since my phone just capitalized probably exists, then shame on me XD ZR1 or ACR? Tough. I heard something about an LT4
Miguel JimenezSep 24, 2012 @Patrick I heard it was still a pushrod and the same block as the LS3.
Patrick SchalkSep 24, 2012 Not to change the subject, but I'm really interest to see if the new C7 is gonna use the 5.5L engine they've been talking about. Maybe DOHC?
Patrick SchalkSep 24, 2012 He said he likes Ford but is excited for the C7.
I don't think I could choose between the ZR1 and ACR. Me likes LS motors but an ACR is an ACR. I'll go with the ZR1 I guess.
Drew StorrustenSep 24, 2012 Well no I was just saying like, normally I dot like Chevy but the corvette is an exception. An yes ford needs to get a super car going!!! I wanna see that. Even if it is another gt.
Drew StorrustenSep 24, 2012 And with how much I like ford, to be honest I really wanna see what the new c7 looks like. I mean, honestly I like the looks of the c6, and the performance, but I really wanna see the new vette. :D
Clay WilliamsSep 24, 2012 They need to take the new gts to the Nuremberg to compare ASAP
Clay WilliamsSep 24, 2012 I bet you the new gts can already come pretty close to the oils ACRs lap time just imagine what a new one could do.
Patrick SchalkSep 24, 2012 I just hope they come out with it within the next year and a half or so. I wanna see a Ring time video and an improvement on time!
Clay WilliamsSep 24, 2012 No Ross you said it wrong it's pronounced "mopar or no car"
Thomas MackeySep 24, 2012 Zr1is good....but viper is an American exotic. Damn good looks and faster on any track.
Thomas MackeySep 24, 2012 ACR would destroy horses and bulls left and right.
Clay WilliamsSep 24, 2012 If they come out with an ACR version it would destroy all of humanity in its wake of awesome!!!
Thomas MackeySep 24, 2012 Clay they will have tons of options to customize each model.
Clay WilliamsSep 24, 2012 Does anyone know will there be any differences between the gts and base viper other than the carbon fiber, interior, and traction control?
Clay WilliamsSep 24, 2012 I think I might like the overall look of the base viper over the gts, I really think the old style hood is better, but on the other hand I like the carbon fiber touches as well.
Zeus MochaSep 24, 2012 Yea it is getting a little personal. I like the viper GTS in the yellow with the carbon back (if thats an option) and then GTS rims in black (if that's an option)
Dillon DixonSep 24, 2012 Many, but not all. Maybe it's just the town or city you live in. You experience a very small percentage if corvette owners, but obviously that's enough to go and troll every vette article.
Austin LarkSep 24, 2012 Ohhhh parental supervision always works out great. Thank God all parents are smart and know what they are doing or that tool of a corvette owner would have a reason to flip out. Shame on him haha
Dillon DixonSep 24, 2012 I have never met a bad corvette owner. Our corvette club in Amarillo run just about every car show in town. They run the annual Make-A-Wish show which raises lots of money for the great cause!
Zeus MochaSep 24, 2012 Yes but relating these stories with the way you feel about a car in even the slightest way is not cool. A car is a car no matter if a crack pot drives it or our mothers.
Austin LarkSep 24, 2012 Hmm maybe ur friends were scratching his car..... I wouldn't be happy about someone not washing a car right and ruining the paint.
Dillon DixonSep 24, 2012 I will never understand why the Corvette will get hated on by so many people.
And there is a ridiculous amount of stupid in this article.
Aaron CrispSep 24, 2012 You hate someone because of the car they drive? You must hate a lot of old retired men hahaha
Austin LarkSep 24, 2012 Actually I know and have met a ton of corvette owners and every one of them are just cool guys. Super nice and really just some good ole boys.
Zeus MochaSep 24, 2012 Didn't know it's available on 4, that's cool. Agreed, I believe that the GTR, Viper, and Corvette are pinnacles. They are fudging awesome, that is why we have so many "danboys" and that's we are "danboys" hahaha btw can anyone see the car? -> 🚗 <-
Matt PiccoloSep 24, 2012 And I'm not getting In an argument since I'm sick so I'm just leaving it at that
Matt PiccoloSep 24, 2012 @ Patrick, but it's another thing when the good is canceled out by the 1990's style civic interior! I can respect it performance wise but as a whole car that I would have to live with, not at all...
Ben KnorrSep 24, 2012 Clay said it best; viper vs vette? Either way you come out on top because they are both great cars. nuff said.
Devin BabynSep 24, 2012 If you think all they changed was the length of it then you know nothing about it
Patrick SchalkSep 24, 2012 Ok so what does? The hand built engine? Constantly better statistics than it's rivals and cars that cost two and three times more? The magnetic suspension? It's sales numbers? It's resale value? It's popularity?
Patrick SchalkSep 24, 2012 Have you not seen how many races the Corvette team has won recently? Or are you just using your opinion as "facts" again?
Patrick SchalkSep 24, 2012 Understand how the free market works? No car would exist that long if they didn't have something special about them.
Clay WilliamsSep 24, 2012 I think the problem with comparing the vette and the viper is no matter how many performance #s and historic values you through around it really doesn't matter because we all love cars and these are booth great cars.
John SerelySep 24, 2012 Back to the vette vs viper, if you ignored everything but the engine, tranny and handling, I honestly what haves very hard time. But, with the exterior, and interior of the viper, I'd go with that
I haven't updated my 4 to iOS6 yet, so
:(
Austin LarkSep 24, 2012 @patrick I know what u mean man. And I'd also have a hard time choosing between the two.
Drew StorrustenSep 24, 2012 Sorry, not trying to offend anyone too btw. Just hoping to resolve a little something. Lol.
Drew StorrustenSep 24, 2012 Our shores and have considerably shown that they are super cars. These cars KICKASS!!! GO AMERICAN BUILT!!!!
Drew StorrustenSep 24, 2012 Took the time though to make their at right. And it has paid off. Not saying vettes never had the time and effort put in too, cause they've put in all this time and effort for this many years now. Both of these cars in turn are AMERICAN, HOMEBUILT on
Drew StorrustenSep 24, 2012 Because thy have made their way through performance through history, annnnd!!! Do it with a small block too.... That's impressive. An I'm a ford fan too. But IMO dodge made super car status because Shelby did help make a great car, and srt really...
Drew StorrustenSep 24, 2012 Because they have a v10 naturally aspirated made out of, you guessed it "plastic" and they are In the right price range, new phone software rocks, and discussing homework makes you smarter. Look equally, the vette should be considered a super car....
Drew StorrustenSep 24, 2012 So basically the ideas behind all these arguments are these... Vettes can't be super cars becaus rod their price but should be considered super cars because they have 60+years of experience and have become cheap plastic, but viper is a super car....
Austin LarkSep 24, 2012 If you want to talk cars with valid points without having childish arguments I'm all for it. If u want to talk about phones and argue like a child, then trade numbers and giggle all night with each other without annoying everyone else.
Zeus MochaSep 24, 2012 I would have the same problem with the cars.
Patrick SchalkSep 24, 2012 I won't say either car is better. I'd have a REALLY hard time choosing between and ACR and a ZR1 if given the chance to own/drive one. BUT I will say that a car doesn't exist for 60+ years for nothing.
Dan RatherSep 24, 2012 I just like cars for what they are not where they are from, who made it, what its pedigree is. None of that matters in my mind its just the final product that matters. I just respect good design and the viper and the vette definitely both have it.
Miguel JimenezSep 24, 2012 @Dan I'm a Mopar Guy as much as I'm a Chevy guy. At car shows we seem to get along just fine.
Dan RatherSep 24, 2012 What's not to like about that add a decent suspension for like 2k and for 40 grand you could have a crazy track car
Dan RatherSep 24, 2012 Of them at track days and autocrosses and its funny because the owners get along a lot better than the car buzz readers lol. Back to the vette I can pick a c6 up used here in Cali get a supercharger for 8grand and get near 600hp and still pass smog
Clay WilliamsSep 24, 2012 It's true they were made of the same stuff but that doesn't really matter, all that maters is how the compare as an all abound car. And In my opinion the viper is simply better.
Dan RatherSep 24, 2012 I think they are both awesome cars too. I don't get why you'd want to attack either car. They both are gonna have flaws. Don't see why people don't understand why people defend vettes. Bottom line they are cheap attainable performance. I've seen both
Zachary MaurerSep 24, 2012 Ik, I just think its fun to get the vette boys pissed, I actually love the z06...a 7.0 NA beast, just like the viper
Dan RatherSep 24, 2012 I think it's funny that all these people claim to have driven or rode in both the vette and the viper and complaining about the vette being made from fiberglass/plastic don't realize the previous generation vipers were made of the same stuff.
Zachary MaurerSep 24, 2012 Lol, idk what happened when I typed in fanboy It corrected to danboy...whatever iOS 6
Clay WilliamsSep 24, 2012 But that doesn't mean I have to bring up the viper on every flippin article.
Miguel JimenezSep 24, 2012 It's kind of hard to tell when someone's joking over written over typed words unless you make it clear. How about adding some emotion to it so people know you're joking like haha or lol.
Clay WilliamsSep 24, 2012 I've got nothing against Danboys I'm a viper Danboys myself.
Zachary MaurerSep 24, 2012 @clay, idk, same with mustang camaro, lambo Ferrari, it was because that Colby kid was a danboy
Clay WilliamsSep 24, 2012 Well the TC definitely has something to go with the vipers new level of control.
Miguel JimenezSep 24, 2012 @Zach huh? Dude it's kind of hard to take you serious when you don't make sense half the time.
Zachary MaurerSep 24, 2012 I usually don't eather, but when u call me dumb...
Clay WilliamsSep 24, 2012 Why when ever there's a viper article does the vette always get pulled into it?
Zachary MaurerSep 24, 2012 What does being dumb have to do with cars, and u said that u thought rolls was a sports car because of the price, then I told u to re read my comment...
Dan RatherSep 24, 2012 @Clay the easier to drive doesn't just come from TC it's the way stiffer chassis, improve suspension dynamics , better braking, and a wider body to hold wider tires and ton of other things I'm probably missing.
Miguel JimenezSep 24, 2012 @Zach Drop out? Do you know me personally? I'm sorry I don't brag about my age over the internet.
Miguel JimenezSep 24, 2012 When did I ever say I thought the Rolls was a sports car? Since when does price determine wether or not it's a super car? What does having straight A's have to do with cars lol?
Zachary MaurerSep 24, 2012 But I don't want to argue with a douche bag, so ill go do my homework while he cools down and continues to be a drop out, adios :D
Zachary MaurerSep 24, 2012 Listen Miguel, how about you actually re read my comment carefully as I say that people now and days determine cars classifications by price instead of other stuff, and like I said you must have no since of humor because I always joke about the vette
Miguel JimenezSep 24, 2012 "the vette (zr1) is just a sports car because it doesn't cost over 150,000 and has more plastic than a recycling plant." ya you sound real intelligent bud.
Zachary MaurerSep 24, 2012 And Miguel I was saying that most cars sports and super are determined by price, If you think a rolls is a sports car then you might be the dumb one...plus I'm a straight A student...soooo don't assume
Dan RatherSep 24, 2012 As in luxury car smooth ride. I mean comfortable at the limit. Aka good driving feedback, controllable over steer etc.
Miguel JimenezSep 24, 2012 @Dan both my comments were directed to Zachary, chill out dude.
Zachary MaurerSep 24, 2012 Theirs have stayed around that long
Dan RatherSep 24, 2012 @miguel are u referring to me? Because anyone who has actually driven at a track knows what I'm talking about. It's important that you are comfortable pushing the car to its limit. Maybe you didn't read all my posts. I'm not talking about comfortable
Miguel JimenezSep 24, 2012 And if you think I'm new here you're sadly mistaken I've been here since Ken and Andy were trolling these articles. Now that that I think of it I've had this app for about 2 years now.
Clay WilliamsSep 24, 2012 That's why you can turn off the TC to get the real viper experience. The now systems are for the most part just enforced government regulation.
Dan RatherSep 24, 2012 Polish is supposed to be pushed*
Miguel JimenezSep 24, 2012 New fanboy? Dude it's simple you just sound dumb how hard is that to process? You're saying what makes a super car it's is price so by your logic a Rolls Royce is a super car?
Dan RatherSep 24, 2012 Liked the most was its added refinement and how much easier it was to control although this was a limited test so I don't think they polish the limits too much. I wouldn't be surprised if the new viper is "easier" to drive than the zr1.
Clay WilliamsSep 24, 2012 Being around for 50+ years doesn't make it better. How long has the impala been around? It seems to me that lately a lot of car company's have just been using old names from there hay day to make people like it more. dart, impala, charger...
Dan RatherSep 24, 2012 Are easier to drive at the limit and people who aren't professional drivers can actually push them a lot more comfortably and not only perform better but also have a lot more fun. Btw I read in motortrend when they drove the new viper the thing they
Zachary MaurerSep 24, 2012 But I don't think most people have driven a zr1, or srt-10, and if they have they were on carbuzzes weekly DFA
Zachary MaurerSep 24, 2012 @clay, most of us haven't, maybe John, and I've rode in both a vette and viper (09)
Zachary MaurerSep 24, 2012 And clay, if anything the vette has about 10x more passion and soul as the viper, it's been around for over 50 years, the viper, what like 12? The guys at chevy know what works and what dosent, the boys at dodge had to go back to the drawing board...
Dan RatherSep 24, 2012 @Clay since when is easier to drive a bad thing btw. not that I think your statement is necessarily true. That's often a sign of well balanced and designed car. That's one of the reasons why ferraris and Lamborghinis get such high praise because they
Zachary MaurerSep 24, 2012 I wasent saying that, but a lot of people do, and Miguel is now the new fanboy here, and I know the vette has carbon fibre and all the crap, you must have no since of humor, but the seats are crappy, they move around if you break to hard (z06)
Clay WilliamsSep 24, 2012 ... Driving these to cars I'm only going of what I've seen and read about them so I could be completely wrong.
Clay WilliamsSep 24, 2012 Ok ok. Maybe I'm being a little hard on the vette. I'll give it credit where it deserves it, to really is a good car and I do like the vette. Just for me personally the viper is on a whole different level, and know I have not had the privilege of..
Miguel JimenezSep 24, 2012 @Clay have you driven both of these? Me personally I haven't so I can't really say they require the same amount of skill. I can't ever choose between the two, it's close to impossible IMO.
Zeus MochaSep 24, 2012 Not comparing C6 with new gen viper*
Zeus MochaSep 24, 2012 Or at least comparing base vette with the viper. The high ends of both are pretty much on par. There are points where one is better than the other but it a very subtle difference. I'm not saying vette is better just that they are "doppelgängers"
Ross TaylorSep 24, 2012 But you could be talking about something different entirely...im just wondering....regardless, I'm a fan of both cars and would love to have them both so screw the arguing lol..to me I don't care what its "title" is.
Zeus MochaSep 24, 2012 Clay please tell me your joking
Ross TaylorSep 24, 2012 @Clay, What do you mean by "it doesn't have the same level of passion as the viper?" Because I think it takes a great deal of passion to keep a model such as the Corvette in production for almost 60 years now...
Justin RouthSep 24, 2012 @Zachary the viper is only a sports car cuz it doesnt have a supercharger? 640hp 600lb/ft is that not enough? Lol
Clay WilliamsSep 24, 2012 The corvette just doesn't have the same level of passion as the viper and the the vette is definitely easier to drive.
Miguel JimenezSep 24, 2012 @Clay has no soul? Dumb statement my friend, dumb statement. 6.2L supercharged smallblock is pretty large. Chrysler and Chevy made these cars with the same intentions fast, inexpensive, and a pure drivers car that only real men can drive.
Clay WilliamsSep 24, 2012 Not enough differences? The viper is a hardcore beast with the largest engine and best torque the sports car has ever seen while the ZR1 is just a car that's fast but really has no soul.
Zeus MochaSep 24, 2012 but it will compete if not hurt most of the big boys. Price isn't the issue when it's about cars that are insanely insane.
Zeus MochaSep 24, 2012 I'd have trouble between vette and viper. Solution = get both. Haha I love how people troll about the plastic thing. It has almost the same as any other car but I guess, what ever floats your boat. C7 won't be the best thing in the world, or that
Miguel JimenezSep 24, 2012 The whole roof on the ZR1 one is made out of carbon fibre for god sakes and not to mention the coat to protect the carbon cost 50 grand per bucket.
Miguel JimenezSep 24, 2012 @Zach Fibre glass and dude you sound dumb... Although the Corvette may not be exotic it's still a super car in my eyes. It has every aspect of a super car. Power, handling, plenty of carbon fibre, light, etc
Zachary MaurerSep 24, 2012 Sports car because it dosent cost over 150,000 and has more plastic than a recycling plant, the viper is a sports car because it has an old v10, and no supercharger thrown onto it, a ton of people just judge cars by looks and price now
Zachary MaurerSep 24, 2012 Ya Colby, that was pretty fanboyish, but as much as I hate to say it, people now and days classify sports cars and super cars by price now, the 911 in my eyes is just a sports car, but its expensive so it's a super car, the vette (zr1) is just a...
John SerelySep 24, 2012 @daniel haha I laughed too when I read what Colby said. Every car in every aspect? Ha! Nice try Colby, but we all know your just a huge fanboy.
Tyler TarboxSep 24, 2012 I agree with Patrick in that I don't care about what the people who can't tell the difference think
Adam BeiersdorferSep 24, 2012 Even the worlds best Chocolate cake, however unbelievable it tastes and looks, will become boring when everyone orders it as well... That's why Exotics (Designed for Niche and not mainstream markets) will always be the strawberry others will choose.
Patrick SchalkSep 24, 2012 Very good point, but that's what separates a gear head and an average Joe. I don't want to listen to anyones opinion who can't tell the difference anyways.
Daniel EadsSep 24, 2012 "The C7 will rival every automobile in every aspect" Colby, thanks for the laugh.
William DownsSep 24, 2012 Maybe so but I would buy a vette anyday before a viper I'm just a Chevy guy, viper is still in there just not #1 in my eyes
Tyler TarboxSep 24, 2012 @Adam. I see your point, but some people like to spend a lot of money on a car and not be flashy about it
Adam BeiersdorferSep 24, 2012 Supercars exotics are about extremes... There is no light version of a Viper, only hardcore and more hardcore... I'd wager the number of Handicapped plates on a Vette outnumber the total plates of a Viper...
Adam BeiersdorferSep 24, 2012 I'm going to say this once.. An exotic/supercar buyer does not want to sit at a light with a $50k version parked next that to an untrained eye is the same car, even if it is the definition of a Sports Car like a Vette...
William DownsSep 24, 2012 Chevy needs to hurry the F up with the c7
Colby ChurchSep 24, 2012 Hopefully when the C7 comes out with its new interior, exterior styling, performance statistics, and technology, some of the critics will shut their traps, seeing as the C7 should be nearly flawless and will rival every automobile in every aspect.
William DownsSep 24, 2012 Cause the corvette and viper are bad ass American answers to the delicate exotics and stomp there ass for less money and are a lot more reliable
Colby ChurchSep 24, 2012 If Chevrolet built a 1000 hp street Corvette, some idiots would still argue it's super car credibility. Everyone needs to stop taking jabs at the Corvette just because it's American and it beats all of its competitors for half the price in most cases
Colby ChurchSep 24, 2012 The Z06 should be considered a super car, much less the ZR-1! The Z06 has 505 hp and weighs less than the all carbon fiber Porsche Carrera GT, which is a super car. How would 638 horsepower be considered a "sports car"?
David Jones-RichersonSep 24, 2012 Mr. Shelby helped create the viper. Not so sure he would disagree. However, I would like to point out that the corvette is by technical standards America's first supercar.
Brian JohnstonSep 24, 2012 Well here's some. Ultimate aero, Saleen s7, ford gt, rossion q1, mossler mt900 all of which fit any super car criteria. And as for a cobra, the closest thing is the venom gt. it's a light weight British car that an American company but a big engine in
Dylan BruderSep 24, 2012 Mr.Shelby would disagree with you
Paul LissonaSep 24, 2012 Me too with this color it's really good. Why does the driver side of the bumper have a bigger gap than the passenger side?

Lou GuerreroSep 26, 2012 Damn it, I want one NOW. I don't want to wait till I'm 40 to own this.
Bobby CommentSep 26, 2012 This car is way to bulky looking to be considered a super car. It looks like several other cars melded together with a bunch of aftermarket plastic. No offense to the fans but I just don't think this car brings anything special to the table.
Dale FredriksSep 26, 2012 I've just realized how identical the rear is to the Maserati Granturismo MC. And that is fantastic, since both cars are absolutely stunning.
Clay WilliamsSep 25, 2012 I agree the 2nd Gen. And 4th Gen. Were quite good looking, and now this 5th one is even better looking.
Andre VettoratoSep 24, 2012 Dont forget about Sergio, the Italian CEO of fiat that saved Chrysler from being bankrupt and gave permission for the new vipers to be made.. Also gave 3000 jobs to Americans and more on the way... Great car!
Shelby CassandraSep 24, 2012 Yeah. Too bad I live in Michigan; I would've loved to own a viper. Sadly it can't handle snow.
Drew StorrustenSep 24, 2012 Personally I still love a viper in blue with white stripes.
Clay WilliamsSep 24, 2012 Patrick you literally just made me LOL.
Patrick SchalkSep 24, 2012 Old Vipers are outdated looking, what a brilliant thing to say.
Shelby CassandraSep 24, 2012 I was so close to buying a 2008 viper last year! Part of me regrets it, but I had to buy a car that could handle Michigan winters.
Michele MoroSep 24, 2012 Actually tought it was the old model at first glance, and thats a really really good thing
Colby ChurchSep 24, 2012 Yellowwww! Oh yeaah! Here we go! Haha. Best color on exotics for sure. IMO of course... :)

Tomas Arango FerreiraSep 25, 2012 I love cars and i haven't bought the car i want because i won't live beyond my means just for a car. Does that make me love them less? I don't think so. But there are other things in life which are priorities. sorry, just my opinion
Patrick SchalkSep 24, 2012 I'm surprised it's taken you this long to catch on Paul.
Devin BabynSep 24, 2012 You can still be a gear head without being hardcore. Just cause you love something doesn't mean you need to dedicate yourself to it. Many people have much more important things to take care of before a hobby. Oh and why don't you just get a better car if yours is a piece of shit breaking down all the time
Clay WilliamsSep 24, 2012 That's what a gear-head is some one who loves cars more than anything.
Clay WilliamsSep 24, 2012 Well cars will always be the at the top of my interest list.
Clay WilliamsSep 24, 2012 You would never understand unless you truly loved cars.
Clay WilliamsSep 24, 2012 When your a gear-head the only thing that matters more than cars is the people you love. Not money.
Patrick SchalkSep 24, 2012 And almost any original numbers matching muscle car. Generally I see those go for more than anything else on Mecum and Barrett Jackson.
Clay WilliamsSep 24, 2012 Well part of the reason I spend 60% on cars (including gas) is that I don't get payed a lot and my car breaks down all the time. But passion is the only thing stoping me from throwing it in a pit and taking a bus.
Patrick SchalkSep 24, 2012 Cars can definitely be investments. And I'd rather enjoy them now while I'm young.

Jason W. EversSep 25, 2012 Or I just made all that up and it sounded good...
Jason W. EversSep 25, 2012 Instead of Dodge having to offset the mileage of the ram and viper with a ton of super mileaged cars or pay a really high fine to CAFE, now only Ram and SRT have to pay the CAFE fine and since they dont produce huge numbers, the fines are much smalle
Zeus MochaSep 25, 2012 Lol it's most likely not true. Fiat had an input in the go of the viper. Separating SRT probably brings more profit.
Luke GordonSep 25, 2012 Emil if this is true I'm sooooo glad they did.
Emil Creed KleijsenSep 25, 2012 @dhruv I think it has something to do with Chrysler not wanting fiat to have anything to do with the car, so they made a brand which fiat doesn't own, therefore it cannot have any interference with it
Dillon MageeSep 24, 2012 I am so glad they didn't kill the viper.

Thomas OlmedaOct 04, 2012 According to motortrend the new viper makes the zr1 feel old fashioned an crude. And the new viper is faster, higher quality, and more comfortable not to mention better handling. I think this should wrap up the argument.
Ross VermillionSep 24, 2012 Nothing's more American than the typical vette
Patrick SchalkSep 24, 2012 Because it's usually something retartedly ignorant, untrue, or something that everyone knows and some idiot just tries to point out again (the interior). We all know it's not on par with what some think it should be, that's been established by the
Keenan CasteelSep 24, 2012 I get the history. That's what I like about the corvette; love the 67 Sting Ray. But I don't understand why guys act offended if somebody makes a negative comment regarding the corvette.
Patrick SchalkSep 24, 2012 Keenan, look at the history and you will see. I don't know how anyone couldn't understand it?
Keenan CasteelSep 24, 2012 It is America's supercar, but people will still defend the corvette to their dying breath. I honestly don't understand the affinity so many Americans have for the corvette.
Clay WilliamsSep 24, 2012 If they went with a paddle shifter there would be riots in the street.
Jonathan GomezSep 24, 2012 So glad they kept the good old fashioned stick shift tran
Mark PasillasSep 24, 2012 America's supercar, just looking at the viper you know it holds that honorably
Kyle KloewerSep 24, 2012 Wow a modern American engine where you can get to see it
Description: It combined just enough of all of the right elements to make it a huge success. What makes it even more special is that it sold far longer and far greater numbers than the Cobra ever did.Add Comments2
Lou GuerreroSep 26, 2012 To be fair the gen1 viper was pretty basic also but the only luxury item a cobra had was the price tag. So combined with the reasons you gave and the entree fee, I don't think it would outsell viper.
Bobby CommentSep 26, 2012 Of course it outsold the cobra. The cobra was not built for public consumption, it was an actual race car. Designed, engineered and built to race and nothing in between. You couldn't walk into a dealership and order a cobra. Come on and compare apples to apples. If they put out a true, authentic, cobra it would put the viper out of business.
Dickson LuiSep 27, 2012 Awesome love the red viper!!
Tyler BradySep 25, 2012 It's because the Italians are the ones that do the interiors. All the Chrysler lineup has nice interiors relative to a few years ago.
Miguel JimenezSep 24, 2012 I just want to live in there!
Rabi NoorSep 24, 2012 The new Interior makes the viper Perfect Unlike any other.
I "love" the Viper and will own it in the nearlly few years Inshallah..
Tyler TarboxSep 24, 2012 This and the CTS-V interiors are awesome
William DownsSep 24, 2012 All American interiors are gonna look great now especially since all 3 company's are financially stable and making profit again
Noah GavurinSep 24, 2012 finally an american interior that doesnt look cheap
Paul DickeySep 24, 2012 Man I'm with you on that. My neighbor has two older vipers. Every night I dream that when I wake up the new srt viper is sitting in his driveway.
John JenkinsSep 24, 2012 I would love to be able to step into that every day
Oh I know about the hood I was more thinking engineering wise.
@clay to answer your question, the GTS had a different hood
@zach, I've been having the same problem. And @ben, yeah if ford can just put the IRS in their new gt500, I would love to see the lap times against the Camaro. But against the ZR1 vette, idk how well it'd do. I'm skeptic of that one.....
agreed. they need to bring back the IRS. Hopefully being out performed in a track setting by the ZL1 will help sway them in that direction.
Well idk if you wanna count the 1000 horse super snake, but unless mustang can liven up the suspension to handle the 700 horse then they won't be able to take it to the track in a very outstanding way. I seriously wanna see it with IRS. Nothing else.
An ACR version of this viper is sure to be everybit as hardcore as the old one and would destroy the current ZR1. Lets hope GM ups the ante with the C7 ZR1. Who's gonna be the first to hit 700hp? Mustang probably haha
I went to go look it up and they're keeping the OHV design.
Haha clay it's nurburgring, unless there is a Nuremberg, which since my phone just capitalized probably exists, then shame on me XD ZR1 or ACR? Tough. I heard something about an LT4
@Patrick I heard it was still a pushrod and the same block as the LS3.
Not to change the subject, but I'm really interest to see if the new C7 is gonna use the 5.5L engine they've been talking about. Maybe DOHC?
He said he likes Ford but is excited for the C7. I don't think I could choose between the ZR1 and ACR. Me likes LS motors but an ACR is an ACR. I'll go with the ZR1 I guess.
Well no I was just saying like, normally I dot like Chevy but the corvette is an exception. An yes ford needs to get a super car going!!! I wanna see that. Even if it is another gt.
And with how much I like ford, to be honest I really wanna see what the new c7 looks like. I mean, honestly I like the looks of the c6, and the performance, but I really wanna see the new vette. :D
They need to take the new gts to the Nuremberg to compare ASAP
I bet you the new gts can already come pretty close to the oils ACRs lap time just imagine what a new one could do.
I just hope they come out with it within the next year and a half or so. I wanna see a Ring time video and an improvement on time!
No Ross you said it wrong it's pronounced "mopar or no car"
Zr1is good....but viper is an American exotic. Damn good looks and faster on any track.
zr1 all day... GM for life
ACR would destroy horses and bulls left and right.
If they come out with an ACR version it would destroy all of humanity in its wake of awesome!!!
Clay they will have tons of options to customize each model.
Does anyone know will there be any differences between the gts and base viper other than the carbon fiber, interior, and traction control?
I think I might like the overall look of the base viper over the gts, I really think the old style hood is better, but on the other hand I like the carbon fiber touches as well.
Yea it is getting a little personal. I like the viper GTS in the yellow with the carbon back (if thats an option) and then GTS rims in black (if that's an option)
Many, but not all. Maybe it's just the town or city you live in. You experience a very small percentage if corvette owners, but obviously that's enough to go and troll every vette article.
Ohhhh parental supervision always works out great. Thank God all parents are smart and know what they are doing or that tool of a corvette owner would have a reason to flip out. Shame on him haha
I have never met a bad corvette owner. Our corvette club in Amarillo run just about every car show in town. They run the annual Make-A-Wish show which raises lots of money for the great cause!
Yes but relating these stories with the way you feel about a car in even the slightest way is not cool. A car is a car no matter if a crack pot drives it or our mothers.
Hmm maybe ur friends were scratching his car..... I wouldn't be happy about someone not washing a car right and ruining the paint.
I will never understand why the Corvette will get hated on by so many people. And there is a ridiculous amount of stupid in this article.
You hate someone because of the car they drive? You must hate a lot of old retired men hahaha
Actually I know and have met a ton of corvette owners and every one of them are just cool guys. Super nice and really just some good ole boys.
Didn't know it's available on 4, that's cool. Agreed, I believe that the GTR, Viper, and Corvette are pinnacles. They are fudging awesome, that is why we have so many "danboys" and that's we are "danboys" hahaha btw can anyone see the car? -> 🚗 <-
And I'm not getting In an argument since I'm sick so I'm just leaving it at that
@ Patrick, but it's another thing when the good is canceled out by the 1990's style civic interior! I can respect it performance wise but as a whole car that I would have to live with, not at all...
Clay said it best; viper vs vette? Either way you come out on top because they are both great cars. nuff said.
If you think all they changed was the length of it then you know nothing about it
Ok so what does? The hand built engine? Constantly better statistics than it's rivals and cars that cost two and three times more? The magnetic suspension? It's sales numbers? It's resale value? It's popularity?
Have you not seen how many races the Corvette team has won recently? Or are you just using your opinion as "facts" again?
Understand how the free market works? No car would exist that long if they didn't have something special about them.
I think the problem with comparing the vette and the viper is no matter how many performance #s and historic values you through around it really doesn't matter because we all love cars and these are booth great cars.
Back to the vette vs viper, if you ignored everything but the engine, tranny and handling, I honestly what haves very hard time. But, with the exterior, and interior of the viper, I'd go with that I haven't updated my 4 to iOS6 yet, so :(
@patrick I know what u mean man. And I'd also have a hard time choosing between the two.
Sorry, not trying to offend anyone too btw. Just hoping to resolve a little something. Lol.
Our shores and have considerably shown that they are super cars. These cars KICKASS!!! GO AMERICAN BUILT!!!!
Took the time though to make their at right. And it has paid off. Not saying vettes never had the time and effort put in too, cause they've put in all this time and effort for this many years now. Both of these cars in turn are AMERICAN, HOMEBUILT on
Because thy have made their way through performance through history, annnnd!!! Do it with a small block too.... That's impressive. An I'm a ford fan too. But IMO dodge made super car status because Shelby did help make a great car, and srt really...
Because they have a v10 naturally aspirated made out of, you guessed it "plastic" and they are In the right price range, new phone software rocks, and discussing homework makes you smarter. Look equally, the vette should be considered a super car....
So basically the ideas behind all these arguments are these... Vettes can't be super cars becaus rod their price but should be considered super cars because they have 60+years of experience and have become cheap plastic, but viper is a super car....
If you want to talk cars with valid points without having childish arguments I'm all for it. If u want to talk about phones and argue like a child, then trade numbers and giggle all night with each other without annoying everyone else.
I would have the same problem with the cars.
I won't say either car is better. I'd have a REALLY hard time choosing between and ACR and a ZR1 if given the chance to own/drive one. BUT I will say that a car doesn't exist for 60+ years for nothing.
I just like cars for what they are not where they are from, who made it, what its pedigree is. None of that matters in my mind its just the final product that matters. I just respect good design and the viper and the vette definitely both have it.
@Dan I'm a Mopar Guy as much as I'm a Chevy guy. At car shows we seem to get along just fine.
What's not to like about that add a decent suspension for like 2k and for 40 grand you could have a crazy track car
Of them at track days and autocrosses and its funny because the owners get along a lot better than the car buzz readers lol. Back to the vette I can pick a c6 up used here in Cali get a supercharger for 8grand and get near 600hp and still pass smog
It's true they were made of the same stuff but that doesn't really matter, all that maters is how the compare as an all abound car. And In my opinion the viper is simply better.
I think they are both awesome cars too. I don't get why you'd want to attack either car. They both are gonna have flaws. Don't see why people don't understand why people defend vettes. Bottom line they are cheap attainable performance. I've seen both
Ik, I just think its fun to get the vette boys pissed, I actually love the z06...a 7.0 NA beast, just like the viper
I think it's funny that all these people claim to have driven or rode in both the vette and the viper and complaining about the vette being made from fiberglass/plastic don't realize the previous generation vipers were made of the same stuff.
Lol, idk what happened when I typed in fanboy It corrected to danboy...whatever iOS 6
But that doesn't mean I have to bring up the viper on every flippin article.
It's kind of hard to tell when someone's joking over written over typed words unless you make it clear. How about adding some emotion to it so people know you're joking like haha or lol.
I've got nothing against Danboys I'm a viper Danboys myself.
@clay, idk, same with mustang camaro, lambo Ferrari, it was because that Colby kid was a danboy
Well the TC definitely has something to go with the vipers new level of control.
@Zach huh? Dude it's kind of hard to take you serious when you don't make sense half the time.
I usually don't eather, but when u call me dumb...
Why when ever there's a viper article does the vette always get pulled into it?
What does being dumb have to do with cars, and u said that u thought rolls was a sports car because of the price, then I told u to re read my comment...
Since of humor? What's that?
@Clay the easier to drive doesn't just come from TC it's the way stiffer chassis, improve suspension dynamics , better braking, and a wider body to hold wider tires and ton of other things I'm probably missing.
@Zach Drop out? Do you know me personally? I'm sorry I don't brag about my age over the internet.
When did I ever say I thought the Rolls was a sports car? Since when does price determine wether or not it's a super car? What does having straight A's have to do with cars lol?
But I don't want to argue with a douche bag, so ill go do my homework while he cools down and continues to be a drop out, adios :D
Listen Miguel, how about you actually re read my comment carefully as I say that people now and days determine cars classifications by price instead of other stuff, and like I said you must have no since of humor because I always joke about the vette
"the vette (zr1) is just a sports car because it doesn't cost over 150,000 and has more plastic than a recycling plant." ya you sound real intelligent bud.
And Miguel I was saying that most cars sports and super are determined by price, If you think a rolls is a sports car then you might be the dumb one...plus I'm a straight A student...soooo don't assume
As in luxury car smooth ride. I mean comfortable at the limit. Aka good driving feedback, controllable over steer etc.
@Dan both my comments were directed to Zachary, chill out dude.
Theirs have stayed around that long
@miguel are u referring to me? Because anyone who has actually driven at a track knows what I'm talking about. It's important that you are comfortable pushing the car to its limit. Maybe you didn't read all my posts. I'm not talking about comfortable
And if you think I'm new here you're sadly mistaken I've been here since Ken and Andy were trolling these articles. Now that that I think of it I've had this app for about 2 years now.
That's why you can turn off the TC to get the real viper experience. The now systems are for the most part just enforced government regulation.
Polish is supposed to be pushed*
New fanboy? Dude it's simple you just sound dumb how hard is that to process? You're saying what makes a super car it's is price so by your logic a Rolls Royce is a super car?
Liked the most was its added refinement and how much easier it was to control although this was a limited test so I don't think they polish the limits too much. I wouldn't be surprised if the new viper is "easier" to drive than the zr1.
... It's all the same.
Being around for 50+ years doesn't make it better. How long has the impala been around? It seems to me that lately a lot of car company's have just been using old names from there hay day to make people like it more. dart, impala, charger...
Are easier to drive at the limit and people who aren't professional drivers can actually push them a lot more comfortably and not only perform better but also have a lot more fun. Btw I read in motortrend when they drove the new viper the thing they
But I don't think most people have driven a zr1, or srt-10, and if they have they were on carbuzzes weekly DFA
@clay, most of us haven't, maybe John, and I've rode in both a vette and viper (09)
And clay, if anything the vette has about 10x more passion and soul as the viper, it's been around for over 50 years, the viper, what like 12? The guys at chevy know what works and what dosent, the boys at dodge had to go back to the drawing board...
@Clay since when is easier to drive a bad thing btw. not that I think your statement is necessarily true. That's often a sign of well balanced and designed car. That's one of the reasons why ferraris and Lamborghinis get such high praise because they
I wasent saying that, but a lot of people do, and Miguel is now the new fanboy here, and I know the vette has carbon fibre and all the crap, you must have no since of humor, but the seats are crappy, they move around if you break to hard (z06)
... Driving these to cars I'm only going of what I've seen and read about them so I could be completely wrong.
Ok ok. Maybe I'm being a little hard on the vette. I'll give it credit where it deserves it, to really is a good car and I do like the vette. Just for me personally the viper is on a whole different level, and know I have not had the privilege of..
@Clay have you driven both of these? Me personally I haven't so I can't really say they require the same amount of skill. I can't ever choose between the two, it's close to impossible IMO.
Not comparing C6 with new gen viper*
Or at least comparing base vette with the viper. The high ends of both are pretty much on par. There are points where one is better than the other but it a very subtle difference. I'm not saying vette is better just that they are "doppelgängers"
But you could be talking about something different entirely...im just wondering....regardless, I'm a fan of both cars and would love to have them both so screw the arguing lol..to me I don't care what its "title" is.
Clay please tell me your joking
@Clay, What do you mean by "it doesn't have the same level of passion as the viper?" Because I think it takes a great deal of passion to keep a model such as the Corvette in production for almost 60 years now...
@Zachary the viper is only a sports car cuz it doesnt have a supercharger? 640hp 600lb/ft is that not enough? Lol
The corvette just doesn't have the same level of passion as the viper and the the vette is definitely easier to drive.
@Clay has no soul? Dumb statement my friend, dumb statement. 6.2L supercharged smallblock is pretty large. Chrysler and Chevy made these cars with the same intentions fast, inexpensive, and a pure drivers car that only real men can drive.
Not enough differences? The viper is a hardcore beast with the largest engine and best torque the sports car has ever seen while the ZR1 is just a car that's fast but really has no soul.
but it will compete if not hurt most of the big boys. Price isn't the issue when it's about cars that are insanely insane.
I'd have trouble between vette and viper. Solution = get both. Haha I love how people troll about the plastic thing. It has almost the same as any other car but I guess, what ever floats your boat. C7 won't be the best thing in the world, or that
The whole roof on the ZR1 one is made out of carbon fibre for god sakes and not to mention the coat to protect the carbon cost 50 grand per bucket.
@Zach Fibre glass and dude you sound dumb... Although the Corvette may not be exotic it's still a super car in my eyes. It has every aspect of a super car. Power, handling, plenty of carbon fibre, light, etc
Sports car because it dosent cost over 150,000 and has more plastic than a recycling plant, the viper is a sports car because it has an old v10, and no supercharger thrown onto it, a ton of people just judge cars by looks and price now
Ya Colby, that was pretty fanboyish, but as much as I hate to say it, people now and days classify sports cars and super cars by price now, the 911 in my eyes is just a sports car, but its expensive so it's a super car, the vette (zr1) is just a...
@daniel haha I laughed too when I read what Colby said. Every car in every aspect? Ha! Nice try Colby, but we all know your just a huge fanboy.
I agree with Patrick in that I don't care about what the people who can't tell the difference think
Even the worlds best Chocolate cake, however unbelievable it tastes and looks, will become boring when everyone orders it as well... That's why Exotics (Designed for Niche and not mainstream markets) will always be the strawberry others will choose.
Very good point, but that's what separates a gear head and an average Joe. I don't want to listen to anyones opinion who can't tell the difference anyways.
"The C7 will rival every automobile in every aspect" Colby, thanks for the laugh.
Maybe so but I would buy a vette anyday before a viper I'm just a Chevy guy, viper is still in there just not #1 in my eyes
@Adam. I see your point, but some people like to spend a lot of money on a car and not be flashy about it
Supercars exotics are about extremes... There is no light version of a Viper, only hardcore and more hardcore... I'd wager the number of Handicapped plates on a Vette outnumber the total plates of a Viper...
I'm going to say this once.. An exotic/supercar buyer does not want to sit at a light with a $50k version parked next that to an untrained eye is the same car, even if it is the definition of a Sports Car like a Vette...
Chevy needs to hurry the F up with the c7
Hopefully when the C7 comes out with its new interior, exterior styling, performance statistics, and technology, some of the critics will shut their traps, seeing as the C7 should be nearly flawless and will rival every automobile in every aspect.
Cause the corvette and viper are bad ass American answers to the delicate exotics and stomp there ass for less money and are a lot more reliable
If Chevrolet built a 1000 hp street Corvette, some idiots would still argue it's super car credibility. Everyone needs to stop taking jabs at the Corvette just because it's American and it beats all of its competitors for half the price in most cases
The Z06 should be considered a super car, much less the ZR-1! The Z06 has 505 hp and weighs less than the all carbon fiber Porsche Carrera GT, which is a super car. How would 638 horsepower be considered a "sports car"?
Mr. Shelby helped create the viper. Not so sure he would disagree. However, I would like to point out that the corvette is by technical standards America's first supercar.
Well here's some. Ultimate aero, Saleen s7, ford gt, rossion q1, mossler mt900 all of which fit any super car criteria. And as for a cobra, the closest thing is the venom gt. it's a light weight British car that an American company but a big engine in
Mr.Shelby would disagree with you
