Jaguar F-Type Debuts in Paris

Jaguar gets into sportscar territory with the debut of the long-awaited F-Type roadster at the Paris Motor Show.

After months upon months of teasers and anticipation, Jaguar has finally lifted the veil on the all-new 2014 Jaguar F-Type. At launch, the new roadster, which takes its inspiration from the classic E-Type, will be available initially as a convertible, a coupe version is slated to follow in the coming months. The all-aluminum F-Type will come in three trims: F-Type, F-Type S and F-Type S V8. The difference comes down to its engine. The base model starts with a supercharged 3.0-liter V6 producing 340 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of torque.

The F-Type S upgrades with a 380hp and 339 lb-ft version of the same engine, and the F-Type S V8 packs a supercharged 5.0 liter V8 with 495 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque. The only transmission available for now is a ZF eight-speed automatic with both paddle shifters and a gearshift lever. The top-of-the-line V8 model goes from 0-60 mph in a blazing 4.2 seconds and has a top speed of 186 mph. The V6 S model does the job in 4.8 seconds with a maximum speed of 171 mph, and the base F-Type still performs the sprint in a very respectable 5.1 seconds with a 161 mph top speed.

An active exhaust system enhances the engine note and, for the first time on a Jag, launch control optimizes acceleration runs. The F-Type S also packs a limited-slip differential and the V8 comes with an active electronic differential. Handling is optimized by the F-Type's lightweight aluminum architecture, 50:50 weight balance, and double-wishbone suspension front and rear, with three braking systems available to keep it all in check. That's all packed into a shape that blends classic proportions with avant-garde styling that brilliantly brings the C-X16 concept's styling to the road.

The enveloping, ergonomic and luxurious cockpit incorporates a 10- or 12-speaker audio system, LCD instruments and available flat-bottom steering wheel. Going on sale in the US next summer, pricing will begin at $69,000 for the base F-Type and we suspect the top-end F-Type V8 S will hover north of $100k.
