GM Planning BRZ/FR-S Fighter

The success of the Subaru BRZ and Scion FR-S have proved to General Motors the value of having an affordable lightweight sports car.

It's no secret the Toyabaru triplets have been true game changers in the affordable sports car segment and aside from the Mazda MX-5 Miata, they currently have no other direct competitor. However, that's likely to change very soon. Speaking with Australia's Drive website at the Detroit Auto Show, GM president of North America Mark Reuss confirmed that his company is at work developing such a competitor and that it was "on the list" of its upcoming models.

This should come as no surprise since GM unveiled at the 2012 Detroit Show the Chevrolet Code 130R Concept, a small rear-wheel-drive lightweight sports car that was powered by a 1.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 150 horsepower and mated to a six-speed manual. If the production green light is given, it would also need to undercut the Camaro in pricing, which starts off at around $24,000. Like always, GM is running the numbers to see if it can make the business case. But judging by the success of the Scion FR-S and Subaru BRZ, the market for such a car is ripe for the picking.
