Cadillac Sixteen to Headline Amelia

This year’s Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance will feature a special class just for Cadillac concepts – including this sixteen-cylinder show car - when it opens on March 8.

The Amelia Concours d’Elegance is one of the premier events of the classic car circuit. When the show opens in just over a week on the Florida island, it will feature a mouth-watering array of classics, including anniversary gatherings of the Ford GT40 and Porsche 911. But one of the headline features of this year’s concours will be an array of Cadillac concept cars. Most of the Caddy show-cars that will be on display hark back to the Motoramas of the 1950s, but one of the stars of the show will be the 2003 Cadillac Sixteen.

If your automotive fascination doesn’t stretch back a decade, allow us to refresh your memory. At the Detroit Auto Show in 2003, GM unveiled this elegant concept car that revived the legendary Cadillacs of the 1930s. Like them, and as its name suggests, it included a sixteen-cylinder engine that matched the output of that other sweet sixteen – the Bugatti Veyron – at 1,000 horsepower and just as much torque, but displaced a massive 13.6 liters. Measuing 19 feet long, the Sixteen concept included four-wheel steering to help it turn on its long wheelbase without sacrificing its elegant proportions.

Also on display in the Cadillac Concept Car Class will be the 2002 Cien concept, a mid-engined V12 supercar that debuted at the 2002 Detroit Auto Show. Concepts of yore include the 1949 Coupe de Ville, 1952 Convertible Coupe, 1953 Le Mans Concept (pictured below with the lady in red), 1953 Supercharged Eldorado, 1956 Eldorado Brougham Motorama Town Car, 1958 Eldorado Biarritz, 1959 Cyclone (the space-age concept below) and the 1961 Eldorado. That de Ville, incidentally, was the first time Cadillac used the famous name, and will appear in public at Amelia Island for the first time in 64 years.
