BMW i3 Tests in the Cold

German automaker releases its own spy shots of the upcoming i3 EV testing in Arctic conditions.

In a few months’ time, BMW will put its i3 EV into production. So the automaker has taken the all-electric hatchback to the Arctic Circle for a spot of cold weather endurance testing. The shots come courtesy of the Bavarian carmaker itself, however BMW failed to reveal any new information about the prototype. For the uninitiated, the i3 utilizes BMW's new Live and Drive architecture, the Drive component being made up of a rear-mounted electric motor rated at 168 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque.

The 0-62 mph sprint is timed at 7.9 seconds and top speed stands at 93 mph. It also boasts a range of approximately 140 miles on a single six-hour charge. Buyers who deem that insufficient will have the choice of the i3 Rex that reportedly comes with a range-extending two-cylinder motorbike engine that allows for travel of up to 186 miles in between recharging or fill-up stations. The i3 will join the i8 sportscar in a new line of electric vehicles from BMW as a dedicated sub-brand to parallel the M performance line, but with greener credentials.
