Alpina Previews New BMW B3 Biturbo

Can't wait for the new M3? Alpina has you covered with its new twin-turbo 3 Series.
When BMW rolls out a new 3 Series, enthusiasts anxiously await the arrival of a new M3. Only this time, the 3 Series coupe is being spun off into a new 4 Series, so we’re looking forward to an M3 sedan and an M4 coupe (and likely convertible, but we’re getting ahead of ourselves here). BMW’s own M division may not be ready to show these models off just yet, but fortunately Alpina is ready to pick up the slack with its new B3 Biturbo, which it will be unveiling at the Geneva Motor Show next week.

Alpina, for the uninitiated, sort of straddles the divide between aftermarket tuner and works performance division, enjoying a measure of factory support in its efforts. It also often applies its enhancements to a new BMW model before the M division gets around to it. In this case, we’re looking at a new 3 Series fitted with, among other enhancements, a 3.0-liter twin-turbo inline-six with 404 horserpower and 442 lb-ft of torque. That makes it nearly 100 horses more powerful than the top stock 335i (although BMW has been known to understate that model’s output), and just 16 horses shy of the outgoing, eight-cylinder M3.

The power is driven to the rear wheels through an eight-speed automatic for a quoted 4.2-second 0-62 time and a derestricted, Autobahn-crunching 190mph top speed. Both sedan and wagon versions are to be offered – which could explain why Alpina is only showing us the front end and some detail shots – as is an all-wheel-drive version in the future.
