SLS Smashes Nurburging EV Record

Mercedes-Benz claims the production EV lap record at the Nurburgring as the SLS AMG Electric Drive beats out the Audi R8 e-tron's time.
Just a couple of weeks ago, Mercedes-Benz won the Nurburgring 24 Hours in the SLS AMG GT3. But the Gullwing supercar isn't done with the Ring just yet. Mercedes has now taken the electric version back to the vaunted Nordschleife and with it set a new lap record. The SLS Electric Drive lapped the circuit in 7:56.234, making it the fastest production electric vehicle ever to lap the Ring. Although the Toyota TMG EV P002 lapped the track last year in 7:22.329, that was an electric racing prototype, neither production-ready nor street-legal.

The SLS smashed the 8:09.099 lap recorded by the Audi R8 e-tron, which previously claimed the “production” EV lap record even though it has not reached production and looks like it never will. It's the first time a road-going EV has lapped the circuit in under eight minutes, achieved in the production version which hits showrooms this month. It packs 751 horsepower and 738 lb-ft of torque to reach 62 in 3.9 seconds and top out at an electronically-limited 155 mph, and carries a list price of 416,500 euros ($550k), making it the most expensive vehicle Mercedes offers.
