Honda Finally Brings US-Bound HR-V to LA Auto Show(Nov 22, 2014)It's about time they brought the HR-V to the U.S. I did an editorial on the Japan-spec 2000 model year HR-V while I was the editor of a small import performance mag back in the late 90s, early 00s.
The 273-MPH Ford GT Will Make You Smile(Nov 01, 2014)278 IS that much faster. Sure it's just under 4mph, but given the difficulty in getting that fast becomes exponentially harder, 278 is pretty insane.
Bentley SUV Will Boast 200 MPH Top Speed(Oct 08, 2014)That's cool and all, but why? Are you really that much in a hurry to your trust fund meeting? Doing it 'just because', while it shows engineering skills, doesn't necessarily mean it should be done.
Modified Eagle Talon is a 1,200-HP Track Monster(Sep 30, 2014)I've written some automotive journalistic blunders in my lifetime as an editor for various car magazines. But I don't think I've ever mistaken a turbo for a supercharger despite right in the video it says 'big turbo'. That's just amateur. Wow.
What The Hell Were They Thinking: Lincoln Blackwood(Sep 18, 2014)I remember when I worked for a small import racing magazine, Ford approached us about trying to see if there was a way to make this thing marketable to that particular demographic. I just remember laughing my ass off in that meeting.
Watch This Guy Drift His Hyundai Into a Wall(Sep 16, 2014)Over the years Hyundai has dramatically improved their quality. They've even had a few cars compete professionally in the WRC. Their Accent rally car is actually pretty badass.
What it's Like to Take a Ferrari F40 to the Alps?(Aug 11, 2014)Man, that car looks like a beast to drive under full acceleration. I've driven some squirrely cars with the Carrera GT being the hardest to drive. But that F-40 would terrify me just out of fear of losing control and damaging it. Still must've been a blast to drive through that mountain range.
Is Japan Exporting Radioactive Cars?(Jul 22, 2014)My grandmother fortunately survived the event with only minimal losses. Going out there to help salvage peoples lives was a hugely humbling trip. It was inspiring to see the community pull together and help one another. I find it ironic when people were waiting in line for hours for water, but when they were told the water had run out, they just politely accepted it and then moved on to another water rationing city. I can't even imagine that kind of polite calm if that happened in the US.
Size Matters: S13 Vs. Twin Charged Freightliner(Jul 22, 2014)As awesome as the production value is, when big money sponsors and manufacturers start pouring in, you start to lose many of the grassroots elements that made the scene approachable at the entry level. It happened with the early days of drag racing and top fuel as well as import drags, drifting, and other counter cultural enthusiast events. So it's both a good and bad thing to have it garner attention from the higher ups who see a potential market niche.
What We Can Expect From BMW's Upcoming Z5(Jul 17, 2014)It was a concept study done a few years ago. Something about moldable skin, even though it was a synthetic cloth or something. Still, interesting idea.
Ford Prepping One-Off Custom Mustang F-35 for Charity(Jul 16, 2014)Nikhil. Helps protect people? It's one of the most expensive design-by-committee projects ever. It's has no specialization as it tries too hard to be everything. http://digg.com/video/the-designer-of-the-f-15-explains-just-how-inanely-stupid-the-f-35-is
Wanna Ride Shotgun in a McLaren F1 GTR?(Jul 15, 2014)I love how wide the Porsche takes the turn compared the the F1. I've driven a coworker's MP4-12C and his 911 GT3. While the MP4 is unlike anything I've ever driven, the GT3 def takes skill. But nothing will ever compare to sitting in one of the two rear seats of an F1. I think I needed to change my underwear from sheer excitement.
Cars America Missed Out On: Australia's Ford Falcon(Jul 15, 2014)I had a 1991 Mercury Capri XR2. I miss that little pocket rocket. The Mercury dealerships in the US didn't know the engine was a Mazda 323 B6T so they wondered why they had such a hard time importing a replacement for me from Australia where the car was made. Had it up to 290 hp until i blew the engine. Damn I miss that car.
Lincoln Considering a Mustang-Based Model(Jun 11, 2014)Bring back the Mercury Capri. While only tangentially related, I miss my 1991 Capri XR2 turbo. Used to race the hell out of it until I blew the engine pushing 275 hp to the wheels. Gotta love that B6T rally engine from Mazda.
Beyond the Prius: Google Has Built its Own Self-Driving Car(May 31, 2014)I remember reading an article in Car And Driver 24 years ago where they talked about the potential for automated cars and that genuine car people would prevent it from actually happening. It was postulated that way because real car people wouldn't want the driving experience removed from them. Interesting how it's shifted.
Mercury is Finished?(May 29, 2014)I loved my 1991 Mercury Capri XR2 turbo. Still one of my favorite cars I've owned. Mazda 323 B6T engine and body by ford Australia. Was a blast after I did a ton of tuner mods and bumped it from 132 hp to 275 hp. Damn I miss that car and hope the concepts to revive it pull through.
Rallying a Subaru WRX is Absolutely Bonkers(May 11, 2014)This makes me miss my 323GTX. Had a great run until my copilot miscalculated a left turn and we rolled the car up the embankment at 85 mph. Had a good laugh at it after. Nothing got our adrenaline going more than a good rally run.
Gearhead Exotica: Scion FR-S Gets Naked(Feb 23, 2014)Whipple makes one of the best superchargers. Thing is fairly bulletproof. Did a couple cars for GM for SEMA back in 2001 and put Whipple on a Cavalier, Sunfire, and a few others. Man that charger was a beast. We are putting one on my buddy's BRZ soon.
Should Hyundai Start a Separate Luxury Brand?(Feb 19, 2014)I worked for hyundais ad agency at the beginning of the 21st century. They truly worked hard to overcome their reputation shortcomings. Had I not actually worked there I would still have the same negative stigma that has plagued them but seeing how much they changed really gave me newfound respect for the brand.
