Why Four-Wheel Steering?

Car manufacturers fit four-wheel steering for various reasons. At high speeds, the rear wheels normally turn in the same direction as the front wheels whereas, at low speeds, they would turn in the opposite direction. These drive-by-wire systems usually have no physical linkage between the steering wheel and rear wheels, unlike earlier mechanical systems. Pros and Cons

Here are some advantages of 4WS. However, as always, there are a few disadvantages, too:

  • Low-speed maneuverability: Opposite- or negative-phase 4WS turns the rear wheels in the opposite direction to the front wheels, usually not by much more than a few degrees. This effectively shortens the wheelbase and reduces the vehicle's turning circle. On the latest Mercedes-Benz S-Class, the opposite-phase 4WS reduces the car's turning circle by 6.5 feet to make it easier to park and for better low-speed maneuverability in tight spaces.
  • High-speed stability: At higher speeds - usually over 30 or 40 mph - same- or positive-phase 4WS turns the rear wheels in the same direction as the front wheels, virtually lengthening the wheelbase and improving high-speed stability during cornering and lane changes.
  • Better steering response: Turn-in response, agility, and handling crispness are improved by 4WS.
  • Better safety: The improved high-speed stability makes for a safer-handling vehicle and the ability to make U-turns in one go at low speeds without having to perform a three-point turn is also a safety feature.
  • Off-road driving: The crab-walking ability provided by some 4WS systems such as that of the GMC Hummer EV Pickup turns the wheels in the same direction at the same angle to help the vehicle get through some tight spots in off-road driving.

Is It The Same As Rear-Wheel Steering?

Since all cars' front wheels are steered, a car with all-wheel steering is often referred to as a rear-wheel steering car because adding the four-wheel steering system enables the rear wheels to turn from side to side too, but this is not strictly correct. So what is rear-wheel steering actually? It refers to a vehicle that has fixed front wheels and is steered by the rear wheels only, such as a forklift truck. Adding rear-wheel steering to a front-steering car turns the steering into a 4-wheel steering system, with all wheels turning from side to side.
