No local safety body has performed a crash test on it yet, so the Alfa Romeo Tonale's safety ratings have not yet been determined. However, other Stellantis products on the FCA Small Wide LWB platform have performed well in crash testing, such as the Jeep Compass, which received a 2022 IIHS Top Safety Pick award. Across the pond, EuroNCAP gave the Tonale a full five-star safety review. We are expecting similar or better safety from the Tonale and its Dodge Hornett sibling as well.
NHTSA safety ratings are not available at this time.
All the normal safety features are present and accounted for and include seven airbags, ABS, stability control, tire-pressure monitoring, and a backup camera. Further to these, each Tonale also comes with adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, traffic-sign recognition, driver-alertness monitoring, front and rear parking sensors, automatic LED headlights with auto high beams, and rain-sensing windshield wipers. Optionally available on all trims via the Active Assist package are a surround-view camera, an active driver assistant, side parking sensors, and an auto-dimming driver-side mirror.

The Alfa Romeo Tonale's reliability ratings are not known yet, because it's still a brand-new product that has not been evaluated by JD Power. Traditionally, reliability is not an Alfa strong suit. The Jeep Renegade that shares the same platform and engine achieved a decent 80 out of 100 for JD Power's Quality & Reliability assessment last year and this may give you a fair indication of what to expect, but we wouldn't be too surprised if the added PHEV gubbins are responsible for a few teething troubles at first. If they are, owners will be covered by the relevant recall action and the Alfa Romeo Tonale's warranty cover. Both the limited and drivetrain warranties are valid for four years/50,000 miles and 10,000 miles of complimentary servicing is included.
Judged on other cars on its platform, the Tonale should be good for an IIHS Top Safety Pick award once it's tested. It also comes with many standard safety features and driver assists.
The Tonale has seven airbags - the front passengers get frontal and side airbags, the driver gets a knee airbag, and both rows' heads are covered by full-length curtain airbags.
