Best All-Wheel-Drive Sedans of 2020

The AWD sedan has been the ideal choice for many throughout the years, and more automakers are making the 4x4 drivetrain the standard. A sedan with AWD offers extra capability in wet and snowy conditions, making it best for those who deal with a torrential downpour every now and then. Many new models for 2020 come with a strong engine and admirable levels of luxury, to boot.

Why a 4WD sedan?

The best all-wheel drive sedan won’t be a cheap financial decision, but likely puts a focus on going faster. The expense to buy one is often worth it for a punchy turbocharged motor that expertly channels its horsepower to an all-wheel-drive system, making it easier to overlook the higher price. The addition of AWD usually increases the overall weight of the car, and in turn, the gas budget. Drivetrains that favor two wheels are typically more frugal in terms of efficiency. These types of vehicles do not come with the availability of diesel powertrains.

The 4WD sedan is usually the strongest in its lineup in comparison to its front- and rear-driven siblings. An all-wheel-drive sedan in 2020 will often be at the top-end of the range. AWD has been the way forward for many automakers, with well-respected models as far back as 2017 from big brands; 2018 also saw plenty of more affordable products rolling out of the factory with the drivetrain as standard.

What to consider before buying

Even the best in the segment has its disadvantages, but it's worth considering that they offer plenty of good aspects to validate the purchase.

Pros

  • Powerful - A four-wheel-driven auto is often powered by bigger engines like a V8 or hybrid-assisted versions, making it great for those who value a bit more performance. More accessible types are still likely to be driven by a 2.0-liter turbo.
  • Spacious interiors - A 4-door is generally far more roomy inside than a 2-door, at least for carrying more people. Obviously the four-door is the better choice for a small family, and as these are often top-of-the-line trims, you have the benefit of extra plushness, too.
  • Quicker acceleration in some variants - In certain cases, the energy being transferred to all wheels translates to better grip from launch.

Cons

  • Heavier fuel figures - The additional mass from the system that’s needed for distribution to all four wheels means that the engine has more to carry around. It’s not as efficient in terms of economy.
  • Typically more expensive - If you don’t need the all-weather capability, the higher price simply isn’t worth it unless you’re opting for a performance-oriented auto that benefits from the improved grip.
  • Added heaviness - The all-wheel-drive adds quite a few additional pounds, and can sometimes feel heavy.

Luxury AWD sedans that top our roster

On our list of four-wheel-driven four-door sedans, the following are noteworthy for their decadence:

  • Porsche Taycan
  • Kia Stinger
  • BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe
  • Volvo V60
  • Mercedes-AMG CLA 45

Pricing of all-wheel drive sedans

How much you’re going to spend on these sedans varies astronomically according to what brand and level of decadence you are aiming for. Prices can range from anywhere between $22k to $185k. If practicality and a low cost are top priorities, the Mazda 3 is impressive. If it's the grandeur and track-ready attitudes you seek, the Porsche Taycan gets the job done.

FAQs

Is it safer than other drivetrains?

In general, four-wheel tractions gives the car better grip, which has obvious advantages in adverse weather conditions.

Is this drivetrain really worth the additional cash outlay?

The added price is only worth it if you’re shopping with drag-racing in mind or if you live in an area that sees a lot of snow or rain. If neither of those apply to you, a rear-driven option will be lighter on fuel and more affordable to purchase.

What is the most reliable all-wheel-drive sedan car?

Models from Volvo and BMW have excellent reliability ratings, but affordable options from Kia also strike high on the reliability meter.
