2022 Audi e-tron S Review: Large And On Charge

If you liken the automotive world to the fashion industry, this season's must-have accessory is the electric luxury SUV. Long the darling of the proverbial catwalk, the aging Tesla Model X now faces stiff competition from the 2022 Audi e-tron S. Ingolstadt's riposte looks the part, but can it steal the show from the ever-trendy Tesla? Audi's first-ever electric S model certainly has the potential to do so.

Three electric motors provide up to 496 horsepower and a mountainous 717 lb-ft of torque, granting the Audi EV some serious performance abilities. 0-60 mph is dispatched in 4.3 seconds, and the e-tron S won't stop accelerating until it reaches a 130-mph top speed. Impressive as that may sound, the base Model X is quicker still. However, the Audi strikes back with an $84,800 starting price, classier looks, and a far more tasteful interior. But there's a threat from BMW, too. If you can get past the looks, the BMW iX is a stellar electric SUV with an equally appealing price and similar performance to the Audi. Is the e-tron worth your consideration? And, if so, which trim level should you opt for?

2022 Audi e-tron S: What’s new?

The e-tron S is an all-new arrival for the 2022 model year. Compared to the regular e-tron, the sportier derivative has more power (496 hp vs 402 hp), superior performance, and a more dynamic driving experience.

Where the e-tron employs two electric motors, the sportier rendition receives three; one is situated on the front axle with another pair sited on the rear.

The e-tron S also receives subtle styling tweaks to reflect its performance credentials. A racy-looking body kit lends the SUV more attitude and pairs nicely with the standard 20-inch wheels. You pay for all of this, though - the base e-tron S is around the same price as the range-topping e-tron Chronos Edition.

Handling and Driving Impressions

Despite the sporting pretensions, the e-tron S isn't the poster child for dynamic SUVs. It may have a low center of gravity, but the 6,074 lb curb weight is felt in sharp corners and during spirited driving. Still, the electric quattro all-wheel-drive provides plenty of grip when pressing on and, overall, the Audi can provide a reasonably entertaining experience if driven at seven-tenths.

The e-tron S has a rather unique setup. As mentioned, the motors situated on the rear axle operate independently which, Audi says, allows for more precise cornering courtesy of the electric torque vectoring. What cannot be faulted is the ride quality. The e-tron S simply glides across the road, courtesy of the five-link air suspension in the front and rear.

Even with the larger 22-inch wheels, the big Audi is unruffled by poor surfaces and potholes. It's particularly adept at highway cruising, where occupants can sit back and enjoy the serenity afforded by the silent motors and cloud-like ride. Despite the size, it's fairly easy to navigate through town but the width may become problematic should you wander down a narrow street. We have no complaints when it comes to the brakes, either. The pedal is responsive and the large 15.7-inch front discs will bring the heavy e-tron to a halt with very little fuss. The regenerative braking system is handy, but you may struggle to get used to it if you're coming from an ICE vehicle.

Verdict: Is the 2022 Audi e-tron S A Good SUV?

There's no denying the Audi e-tron S is an accomplished electric performance SUV. It's very good, but the Audi also has to compete with talented rivals such as the Model X and the BMW iX - both of which offer comparable performance specs and superior range to the 2022 Audi e-tron S. For years, Tesla has ruled this segment in the USA, and it's easy to see why. Not only is the Model X faster, but it's more practical and offers just as many bells and whistles. The BMW is nearly as rapid and, for similar money, offers an even classier cabin and better efficiency. Both the polarizing BMW and the Tesla deserve your attention when shopping in this segment. But, with a base price of $84,800, the new Audi e-tron S is nearly $40,000 cheaper than the Tesla and not much more than the BMW. Looks may be subjective, but it's also the prettiest electric SUV of the bunch and delivers the best driving dynamics, too.

Unfortunately, it is left trailing with a low driving range of just 208 miles (with 20-inch wheels). This is nowhere near as good as the aforementioned rivals, which can both easily travel more than 320 miles before requiring a battery top-up. The e-tron S attempts to make up for this with plenty of standard equipment and a beautifully smooth ride. Still, the 2022 Audi e-tron S is a good SUV. We'd even describe it as excellent. But if range anxiety is an issue for you, none of that will matter. Those who travel shorter distances should consider the electric Audi, though, as there's a lot it does brilliantly.

2022 Audi e-tron S vs BMW iX

Behind the challenging looks of the BMW iX beats the heart of an incredible luxury SUV. Yes, the exterior styling may not be to your tastes but you may just find yourself falling for the rest of the package. The xDrive 50 may not be as fast as the Audi, but a 0 to 60 mph sprint time of 4.4 seconds is nothing to scoff at. Of more importance is the vastly superior range (324 miles vs the Audi's 208 miles) and the marginally lower price tag; the BMW has a starting MSRP of $83,200.

While the Audi has a great interior, the iX has it beat in terms of detailing and visual drama. It's a triumph of contemporary luxury, appearing both minimalist and decadent at the same time. The BMW has the measure of the e-tron S in terms of interior space. Between these two, it really does come down to personal tastes, styling preferences, and importantly, driving range.

2022 Audi e-tron S vs Tesla Model X

For many, the Tesla Model X is the obvious choice. Not only is the Tesla faster, but it also boasts a more commodious cabin with seating for up to seven occupants, more cargo space, and the best range of the bunch - 324 miles on a full charge, to be exact. However, it's not as elegant as the Audi and lacks the overall refinement of the e-tron S, too.

The interior is a weak point for the Model X. While we wouldn't describe it as cheap-feeling, it has no business being called a premium product. Compared to the BMW and the Audi, the Tesla's interior is downright disappointing. It also can't hope to match the Germans in terms of ride quality. It's comfortable but doesn't soak the bumps up quite as well as its European counterparts. Then we get to the price - $120,990 before incentives. This makes it nearly $40,000 more expensive than the BMW and Audi and we don't think it's worth the extra outlay. You could purchase the Audi and use the money you've saved to purchase a lightly used Model 3.
