As you would expect from a posh Audi, the interior of the e-tron S is a masterpiece. The quality of the materials used is excellent and the design itself is modern and clean. There are a few places where cheap-feeling plastics can be found but, for the most part, there's an overwhelming sense of solidity. This is one area where the Tesla Model X is simply outclassed. The Valcona leather sports seats not only look good but offer plenty of support and comfort. Both front and rear outboard passengers are treated to heated seats, with plenty more toys and convenience features to play with.

Tech lovers will delight in the Audi MMI infotainment system. The 10.1-inch touchscreen is supplemented by a digital driver's display and an 8.6-inch screen for other controls, but more on that later. There's plenty of space for passengers to relax, but those wanting to carry more than five passengers may want to look elsewhere.

Seating and Interior Space

As a midsize luxury SUV, the 2023 e-tron S can comfortably seat five occupants across two rows. Two large adults will find the first row to be accommodating; there is 40.8 inches of legroom and 38.1 inches of headroom up for grabs in the front. This compares well to the notably larger Model X, which offers up slightly more legroom, at 41.1 inches.

The rear seats are even more inviting, and individuals up to six feet tall will revel in the 38.6 inches of headroom. Legroom is rated at 39.1 inches. The lack of a transmission tunnel will come as a blessed relief to those in the middle rear seat. It makes things a lot more comfortable in the second row. Getting in and out of the vehicle shouldn't prove a hardship, either. The doors open nice and wide, which is great if you need to fit a child seat or two on the rear bench. There's no option for a third row of seats. If you need to ferry more than four people around at a time, the Tesla Model X will be your best bet.

The driving position is well-judged and those at the helm of the e-tron S will feel at home very quickly. The standard 12-way power-adjustable front seats and steering wheel allow you to dial in your preferred position with ease. Outward visibility is good, thanks to a large glasshouse and slim A-pillars. The same can't be said of the chunky D-pillar, which can hinder rear visibility. Thankfully, the e-tron S comes standard with a top-view camera system.

Interior Colors and Materials

Both the Premium Plus and Prestige derivatives receive standard Valcona leather upholstery. But, unlike the exterior, Audi has limited the interior color scheme to just three shades; Rotor Grey (with Anthracite stitching), Black (with Rock Grey stitching), or Arras Red (with Agate Grey stitching).

As part of a $2,000 Individual Contour Seat package, the e-Tron S eschews the Valcona upholstery for contour front pews trimmed in a combination of Valcona and Milano leather. This is only available in Black with Rock Grey stitching. Last year's Fine Ash Wood trim inlays are replaced by Carbon Square Structure inlays this year. As you would expect, the steering wheel, gear selector, and door cards are also trimmed in leather.

The e-tron S has a decently sized trunk that measures 28.5 cubic feet with the second row of seats upright. For everyday tasks (the school run or grocery-store trips), the e-tron S will easily accommodate several items with ease. If you need to haul something larger, the rear bench can fold flat and offers up a generous 56.4 cubes of packing space. It must be said, however, that it isn't much more than what the smaller Q5 offers (54.1 cu. ft).

It also trails behind the Model X, which has as much as 91 cubes of cargo space. The frunk is another source of disappointment in the e-tron S. Audi hasn't utilized the available space as well as it could have. There's just about enough space for the charging equipment and not much else. At least engineers have placed more thought into the interior storage. The glovebox is sizeable and so too are the door bins, which will easily swallow a large drinking bottle and a few personal items. A deep storage bin can be found under the front center armrest, along with twin cupholders for those seated up front. Lastly, the trunk also boasts handy nets that will keep smaller items from rolling around the load bay while you're driving.

Features

Both e-tron S models are very well-equipped. Even the base Premium Plus trim level receives automatic LED headlights, a panoramic sunroof, 12-way power-adjustable front seats, leather upholstery, the LED Interior Lighting Plus package, four-zone climate control, and seat heating in the front and rear, among other things.

The plusher Prestige derivative builds on this by including Matrix-design LED headlights, a head-up display, power soft-close doors, and sunshades for the rear side windows. Regardless of which trim level you opt for, you'll be comforted by the fact that luxury carmaker has not skimped on standard safety equipment.

Some of the many driver assists include Audi pre-sense (basic, front, and rear), traffic-sign assist, lane-assist, a 360-degree top-view camera, and side assist with a blind-spot monitoring system. The top trim gets a head-up display and intersection assist as standard. There aren't many options to choose from, save for the various packages.

Infotainment

Both the Premium Plus and Prestige variants of the 2023 e-tron S receive Audi's MMI multimedia system. A 10.1-inch display controls the audio and vehicle controls, while an 8.6-inch display positioned below it takes care of the climate control and various seat settings. A 12.3-inch Virtual Cockpit digital gauge cluster is also standard fitment on both models. Like the infotainment screen, it's got a crisp display and is highly configurable.

The MMI system boasts myriad features. Delve into the system and you'll find Apple CarPlay/Android Auto compatibility, Bluetooth, and satellite navigation with 3D imagery and an e-tron route planner. A nifty touch is the Predictive Traffic Light system; this provides the driver with a speed recommendation which, theoretically, should allow you to sail through green lights continuously.

In-car Wi-Fi is also available through a subscription, but Audi does throw in a six-month trial period. This covers the aforementioned Google-powered 3D navigation imagery and Amazon Alexa compatibility, among other things. Wireless charging also forms part of this comprehensive tech package, along with a desirable 16-speaker Bang & Olufsen audio system with 3D sound. The more expensive Prestige doesn't offer much more in this department.
