The 2021 Audi Q3 forms part of the second generation of the Q3 SUV moniker, which debuted in 2019. Since then, Audi has been applying various improvements and alterations to the subcompact, 5-door, crossover SUV to keep it attractive in the booming classification. Its handsome and ritzy presence is amiable but with only a 2.0-liter turbo 4-cylinder engine providing power, its four-ring insignia and authoritative impression prove to just be more of a crutch than a promise. Nevertheless, you get the choice between a 184- or 228-horsepower version of the engine, the latter proving a little more efficacy higher up in the rev range. The modern SUV also delivers some enjoyable, urban-centric handling characteristics and a serene ride quality that really manifests on the highway, making the Q3 SUV a sublime vacation cruiser. The BMW X1, with its strapping and genuinely fun performance dynamics, along with the Volvo XC40, and the Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class, are some serious competition, so are the Q3's continuous updates enough to sustain its appeal?
The 2021 Audi Q3 lineup was fine-tuned by the manufacturer for the latest model year - the Prestige trim has been dropped, and the Premium trim gains power front seats with lumbar support as standard. The safety suite across the range has been fleshed out with lane departure warning, progressive steering, and paddle shifters on the steering wheel. The Premium Plus trim now receives standard adaptive cruise control, customizable LED interior lighting and a stainless steel trunk sill. Optional packages were also tweaked a little, with the Convenience package getting heated power-folding exterior mirrors and an auto-dimming rearview mirror with compass. A premium Bang & Olufsen sound system is added to the available Technology package, as is traffic sign recognition. An all-new Black Optic Sport package has been made available, too, with 19-inch matte wheels, blacked-out exterior accents, and S line sport seats in black or grey with contrast stitching. The new Parking Assistance package adds a top-view camera and park steering assist. As far as new colors go, Navarra Blue joins the exterior paint palette. Lastly, the Q3 45 TFSI is exclusively available in the S line exterior for 2021.

There are few subcompact crossover SUVs that look as good as the 2021 Audi Q3, especially in its authoritative S Line guise, which complements the Q3's cosmic trapezoidal grille and other sporty exterior elements. The Q3's engine is quite a bit of a downer, however, with both the 40 and 45 TFSI versions exhibiting obvious turbo lag at city driving speeds. Performance improves significantly once on the highway, however, where the Q3 becomes a really pleasant cruiser. It's an easy-to-drive and genuinely comfortable vehicle on the road, too, always remaining compliant and composed with an admirable sense of refinement. It's cabin is modern, featureful, and rather commodious, though the back seats are more suitable for children than adults. It's not a very practical car, either, with its relatively confined trunk and complete absence of an official towing capacity.
The Q3 remains an enticing choice as a family runabout, nonetheless, with both the NHTSA and the IIHS in US having conducted a review of the 2021 Audi Q3 and availing it with top-notch crashworthiness and safety ratings. Starting at $34,000, the 2021 Audi Q3 SUV's price is good for what it has to offer and, along with its good fuel economy returns, it is a savvy purchase.
For improved acceleration and throttle responses, Q3's with the dialed up TFSI 45 engine are the ones to go for, otherwise, the TFSI 40 engine, while laggy and lethargic, is the most fuel-efficient. Considering improvement in performance and how little the change in fuel economy is between the engines, we'd go for the more potent TFSI 45 unit. As for features, the top-tier Premium Plus is the trim to go for as it comes standard with a good selection of advanced features and tech for not much more money than the lower-tier trims. These include keyless entry with start/stop, adaptive cruise control with traffic jam assist, parking sensors, and Audi's side assist with rear cross-traffic alert.
