The interior of the Audi S5 Sportback is solidly constructed of high-quality materials and logically laid out. It's stylish and easy to use, with separate HVAC controls, but not everyone will love the freestanding iPad-like infotainment screen perched atop the dashboard. It's high up and easy to see though. It's nearly identical to the S4 inside, and those wishing for a bit more differentiation may be disappointed. Still, it seats four in comfort, with a smaller human accommodated in the middle rear seat additionally - but they won't be overly comfortable.
There is plenty of interior space up front, even for tall passengers. In the second row, things aren't as rosy and the S5 Sportback is down on the S4 sedan - the 35.1 inches of rear legroom is 0.6 inches less and the 37 inches of headroom, 0.4 inches less. The raised center of the rear bench further diminishes the available headroom. Seating comfort is excellent, however, and the front seats are heated across all models, while the Prestige's rear seats also get heating. The sloping roofline requires a bit of stooping to get into the rear, but it's still a lot easier than in the two-door coupe, which requires a lot of undignified clambering. Sightlines are generally unobstructed ahead of the driver, but that coupe-like rear and wide rear pillars do obstruct over-the-shoulder visibility. At least a rear-view camera is standard.

The seats of the Audi S5 Sportback Premium are covered in black leather with Dinamica on the center portions of the seats and Rock Gray stitching. The headliner is black cloth, and the standard trim inlays are Carbon Atlas. At no extra cost, Rotor Gray leather/Dinamica seats with Anthracite stitching can be had. These are the only interior colors on the S5 Sportback Premium's menu of available options.
Besides these two standard no-cost options, the Premium Plus and Prestige trims have access to more materials and color combinations. Firstly there is full leather seating minus the diamond stitch as part of the Warm Weather Package, available only in black. Then there are $1,000 Nappa leather options. The same two color schemes as the standard leather/Dinamica seats are available, in addition to black with Crescendo Red stitching and Magma Red with Granite Gray stitching. Furthermore, the top two trims have access to the $900 Audi Sport Interior package, which adds a whole lot of extra Crescendo Red stitching - also on the steering wheel - and RS Carbon inlays.
The cargo space of the Audi S5 Sportback with all the seats in use is the best in its class. The luggage compartment's volume is a spacious 21.8 cubic feet - enough for six carry-on suitcases - and that's even before you've folded down the 40/20/40-split rear seat - giving you access to a 35-cube trunk. The space is easy to use, and large objects can be loaded thanks to the practical liftgate. The 4 Series Gran Coupe comes closest with a trunk volume of 16.6 cubes with the rear seat up - and beats the S5 by more than ten cubes with it down.
Interior storage spaces are not overly generous. The front cupholders won't hold large cups and the center-console storage area is only good for small items like wallets. The glovebox is average, there is a slim slot next to the gearshifter where the buttons to operate the electric hood of the convertible A5 would normally be, and there are small pockets on either side of the center console. The door pockets aren't very big, but at least they are fitted to the rear doors too. The fold-down rear center armrest contains a shallow lidded storage area and incorporates two cupholders as well. The rear passengers also have access to front seatback pockets.

The S5 Sportback Premium is fairly well equipped and comes with leather/Dinamica upholstery, heated front seats, cruise control, keyless entry and start, a backup camera, a power liftgate, a power panoramic sunroof, LED interior lighting, three-zone automatic climate control, an auto-dimming interior mirror, three Audi Drive Select driving modes, a HomeLink garage-door opener, two USB ports and an auxiliary input jack in the center-console storage box, and a basic suite of Audi Pre Sense driver assists. Higher trims get adaptive cruise control, stitched leatherette on the door armrests and center console, upgraded audio, an Audi Virtual Cockpit digital gauge cluster, wireless device charging, SiriusXM, a surround-view camera, and front and rear parking sensors. The top-end model gains a head-up display and parking assist, while other optional extras, depending on the trim, include ventilated front seats.
Audi's 10.1-inch MMI touchscreen display is situated above the center stack and controls the infotainment and audio system. The standard infotainment includes Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, voice controls, and an Audi audio system with ten speakers - including a subwoofer. The two top trims get Audi's Phone Box with wireless charging and a signal booster, in addition to a Bang & Olufsen 3D audio system with 19 speakers. The Prestige gets MMI Navigation Plus, and a six-month trial of Audi Connect Plus services, which includes Amazon Alexa integration, a Wi-Fi hotspot, online/hybrid radio, satellite imagery, and traffic-light information.
The S5 Sportback's trunk offers 21.8 cubic feet with the rear seats in use, equivalent to around six carry-on suitcases or a week's shopping. The space is easy to access via a hatch-style liftgate. The rear seat splits and folds 40/20/40 to expand trunk capacity to 35 cubes.
Technically, the S5 Sportback is classified as a five-seat car and there are seatbelts for five occupants. However, in practice, the center rear passenger would be uncomfortable, because the rear seat is sculpted for two people and the center occupant sits on a raised section that causes them to slide around, while robbing them of significant headroom. The cabin is also too narrow to accommodate three across comfortably, so it's realistically a four-seater.
