While no comprehensive S5 Sportback safety reviews exist, the A5 Sportback on which it's based was evaluated fully. The NHTSA rates the four-door coupe at five stars in all categories barring the frontal crash test, where it scores four. From the IIHS, the A5 Sportback scores top marks and carries a Top Safety Pick+ award for the mechanically identical 2022 model.

Besides sound crash scores, the S5 Sportback has a long list of standard safety features. Even the base Premium trim has ABS, stability control, six airbags, tire-pressure monitoring, a backup camera, keyless entry and start, an auto-dimming rear-view mirror, lane-departure warning, and Audi Pre Sense City, a frontal accident-preparation system that closes the sunroof and windows, tightens the front seatbelts if a crash is imminent, and includes forward-collision warning with automatic braking.
The Premium's somewhat lacking list of safety features can be supplemented by opting for the $2,500 Convenience package that, besides some convenience features, also includes auto-dimming exterior mirrors, blind-spot alert, front and rear parking sensors, and Audi Pre sense rear, a rear-sensing accident-preparation system.
The Premium Plus gains adaptive cruise control with traffic-jam assist, front and rear parking sensors, a 360-degree camera system, blind-spot alert, active lane-change assist, and Audi Pre sense rear. The Prestige trim adds even more safety features, notably LED/laser headlights, traffic-sign recognition, a head-up display, and a parking assistant. Side airbags for the rear passengers can optionally be added at $350.

So far, the 2023 Audi S5 Sportback's reliability remains unblemished and it has not been subject to any recalls at the time of writing. The 2022 model was recalled for issues with the rearview camera. These results are a solid improvement over the 2021 S5 Sportback, which was recalled five times.
Audi's limited warranty on the 2023 Audi S5 Sportback is valid for four years or 50,000 miles, whichever comes first. It also comes with a 12-year warranty against corrosion perforation, and four years of 24-hour roadside assistance.
The Audi S5 Sportback was only subjected to the NHTSA's rollover test, for which it scored five out of five stars. For the rest of the crash tests, the results of the A5 can be used, which scored five stars overall. The IIHS awarded the A5 Sportback on which it's based top scores and a Top Safety Pick+ award for 2022.
As standard, the S5 Sportback's front passengers both get frontal and side airbags, while curtain side airbags cover both rows, for a total of six airbags. Side airbags in the rear passengers' seats are an optional extra on all trims for a charge of $350.
