If you're in the market for a plush and compact four-seater convertible, you may have noticed your options are limited - and decidedly German. For decades, that country's luxury brands have ruled the USA market - none more so than BMW and its elegant 4 Series Convertible. Now in its second generation, the 4er drop-top has a strong lineage that can be traced back to the E30 of the late '80s. Clearly, Munich has plenty of experience in this segment.
A brief stint behind the wheel of the 2023 4 Series Convertible will confirm this; it's a stellar machine to pilot. Priced between $55,500 and $68,250, the Bimmer takes the fight to the beautiful but aging C-Class Convertible and the elegant Audi A5 Convertible, both of which are strong contenders. Underpinned by the CLAR architecture, the BMW is the most athletic of the trio, also reflected by the punchy engines on offer.
A 2.0-liter turbocharged engine with 255 horsepower and 294 lb-ft of torque can be found in the 430i derivatives, but the headline act is undoubtedly the sweet-sounding 3.0-liter that does duty in the M440i variants. With a muscular 382 hp and 368 lb-ft, this turbocharged straight-six can rocket the drop-top to 60 mph in a mere 4.7 seconds in xDrive guise. All models utilize the ZF-sourced eight-speed automatic transmission, regardless of the driven wheels.
The convertible is the looker in the 4 series range with its tasteful cloth top, and while it may be a talented performer, is it still the superior choice in this small but esteemed segment?
The BMW 4 Series Convertible is still a relatively fresh entrant to the lineup so, for 2023, BMW has kept the changes to a minimum. Both engines soldier on unchanged and the styling hasn't been tampered with either.
However, that hasn't stopped the automaker from making a few tweaks here and there. The optional Shadowline package now receives M Sport brakes with blue or red-painted calipers, while the controversial Gesture Control function has been removed from the Premium Package.
It's also worth noting the head-up display is now an M440i exclusive, but buyers can at least specify the SensaTec leatherette dashboard on all models. Elsewhere, the Icon Adaptive LED Headlights with Laserlight are no longer available as a separate feature.
Lastly, the Parking Assistance Package has returned and the color palette has gained a new hue in the form of Skyscraper Grey metallic. Sadly, it has replaced the rather attractive Bluestone metallic hue.

If you're looking for dynamic thrills, you'd be better off with the sharper and more affordable Coupe. That's not to say the soft-top doesn't enjoy a spirited sprint around a succession of bends, though. This is a BMW after all, and the 4 Series Convertible should be praised for its precise steering and lively chassis.
The softer suspension setup may not impress hardened BMW alumni, but it suits the relaxed persona to a tee. At low speeds, there's a reassuring composure to the way the 4 series rides. There's an inherent firmness, but the suspension feels more forgiving and makes town driving a breeze. When fitted with the standard 18-inch wheels, the drop-top eschews rough road surfaces with confidence and there's very little cowl shake present.
If you want a crisper driving experience, the 255-hp/294-lb-ft 430i models are available with the $3,200 M Sport package. Along with several nice-to-haves, the optional performance bouquet includes more athletic suspension - but be warned: What you gain in handling you lose in comfort and it's notably firm for everyday driving.
We'd forgo this on the 430i, which is better suited to cruising along. If you simply must have the harder setup, it's worth considering the $700 M Adaptive suspension option. It builds on the already impressive dynamics and also affords a comfier ride. The M440i is the more spirited option. The 3.0-liter straight-six relies on turbocharging to provide 382 hp and 368 lb-ft which, like the rest of the range sends its power to the wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission. The M Sport package is standard and it also receives stronger M brakes that exhibit impressive stopping power.
Purists won't think twice about opting for the RWD variants. Not only are they cheaper, but the pin-sharp handling is better appreciated in this setup. The all-wheel-drive models are faster and provide better traction, however.
NHTSA safety ratings are not available at this time.
It's difficult to remain objective when evaluating a car like the 4 Series Convertible. On paper, it makes very little sense. It's notably more expensive than its tin-top sibling and, in return, you receive slower acceleration and dulled handling characteristics due to the heavier curb weight. It's not quite as spacious inside, and even the trunk space suffers.
But throw all logic out of the window and you can see the appeal. As an object of desire, the 4 Series Convertible is a masterpiece. It's a distinctively styled and well-built piece of engineering that rides well and still shimmies with glee through a mountain pass. And while there is no official safety review for the 2023 BMW 4 Series, the folding soft-top brings some glamor and excitement to the daily commute.
The new BMW 4 Series Convertible truly possesses a dual personality. It's happy to cruise along at high speeds, encapsulating the occupants in comfort and luxury. But, at the flick of a switch, it transforms into a graceful convertible that can turn a regular Sunday drive into an occasion. The biggest chink in its armor is the controversial grille and front facia.
Perhaps not as classically elegant as the Audi A5 Convertible, there's no denying BMW has spooked its more traditional buyers. If, however, the looks do it for you, there's no denying the 2023 4 Series Convertible will make you very happy. It's a great car, and thanks to an extensive array of options and two excellent engines, it's easy to specify the Bimmer to your exacting tastes.
