2023 BMW 4 Series Coupe Performance

BMW has traditionally been the driver's choice when it comes to German luxury cars, and the 2022 BMW 4 Series Coupe continues to push that sporty image with mixed results. With two powerful engine options available, the 4 Series Coupe certainly isn't a slouch off the line. The entry-level 430i is powered by a 2.0-liter inline four-cylinder turbocharged gas engine producing 255 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. Power is sent to the rear wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission, and the 0 to 60 mph sprint takes a brisk 5.5 seconds. The AWD 430i xDrive will do the same sprint in 5.3 seconds.

Stepping up to the turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six engine in the M440i sees the power level increased to 382 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque, resulting in a 0-60 mph sprint time of 4.6 seconds and a top speed of 130 mph, or 155 mph when fitted with performance tires. The M440i xDrive drops that time down to 4.3 seconds and feels properly rapid when given a decent stretch of road.

The 2022 BMW 4 Series is offered with two engine options, both of which offer impressive performance and decent fuel economy. The base engine, found in the 430i and 430i xDrive, is a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine producing 255 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. Power is sent to the rear or all four wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission. This little four-cylinder offers a strong surge of torque throughout the low to mid-range and feels peppy in town. On the highway, it settles down nicely, and there's more than enough urge for overtaking.

BMW is known for its brilliant inline-six engines, so if you're any sort of enthusiast, the B58 3.0-liter six-cylinder TwinPower turbo engine is the only way to go. Producing 382 hp and 369 lb-ft, this motor delivers strong performance and makes the 4 Series feel properly rapid. Not only is it powerful, but the inline-six engine sounds pretty good too, and adds significantly to the 4 Series' character. This inline-six will waste no time winning you over on a test drive. The eight-speed automatic used in both powertrains offers quick and smooth shifts.

For a sporty coupe, the BMW 4 Series is impressively frugal when it comes to gas mileage, especially in its four-cylinder configuration. According to the EPA, the 2022 BMW 430i will manage 25/34/28 mpg on the city/highway/combined cycles. The AWD 430i xDrive will see those numbers drop slightly to 23/33/27 mpg. Going for the larger and more powerful 3.0-liter engine will cost you, but not as much as you'd imagine: the M440i will return 24/32/27 mpg, and the M440i xDrive still manages a respectable 22/31/25 mpg. Fitted with a 15.6-gallon fuel tank, you're looking at a maximum range of between 390 and 436 miles.
