If you want the best in luxury and technology that BMW has to offer, but don’t want the corporate image associated with the 7 Series sedan, there’s the 8 Series Coupe. Now available with a six-cylinder engine option too, the range comprises the 840i, 840i xDrive, and M850i. The 840i twins use a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six producing 335 hp and 368 lb-ft, while the burly M850i cranks out 523 hp and 553 lb-ft. All models use an eight-speed automatic transmission.
The 840i sends power to the rear wheels only and gets 18-inch alloy wheels, a power moonroof, adaptive LED headlights with BMW’s Laserlight technology, and power-folding side mirrors. In the premium cabin, leather covers the seats and both front chairs feature 14-way power-adjustment. Dual-zone automatic climate control takes care of driver and passenger comfort, while everyone gets to enjoy a 16-speaker Harman Kardon surround-sound system. BMW’s digital instrument display comprises a 12.3-inch screen, while the iDrive system is operated via a 10.25-inch central touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Bluetooth. The 840i xDrive shares these features but also gets all-wheel-drive and integral active steering.
Topping the range is the M850i. It gets a more aggressive styling job thanks to 20-inch wheels, Shadowline trim, an M rear spoiler, and an aerodynamic kit. The seats get an upgrade to 16-way multi-contour chairs (in front) and Merino extended leather is standard. Front-seat ventilation is also part of the package on this trim.
