The BMW 8 Series Coupe trims comprise the 840i, 840i xDrive, and M850i xDrive. The only difference between the two six-cylinder 840i models is their drivetrain configurations - the 840i is RWD, and the 840i xDrive is AWD with rear-wheel steering standard. Both are powered by the same 3.0-liter turbocharged inline six with 335 hp and 368 lb-ft of torque.
Both the 840i and 840i xDrive include automatic adaptive LED/laser headlights, 19-inch M Double-spoke alloy wheels, an illuminated kidney grille, adaptive damping, an M Sport differential, heated and power-folding side mirrors, a passenger-side reverse auto-tilting mirror, soft-close doors, a power trunk lid, an aerodynamic exterior body kit, blacked-out Shadowline exterior trim, and an illuminated kidney grille.
Inside, both have extended Merino leather upholstery, an instrument panel trimmed in Nappa leather, an anthracite headliner, and aluminum trim. Features include keyless entry, push-button start with remote start, 12-way electrically adjustable and heated front seats, a three-spoke multifunction M Sport steering wheel that tilts and telescopes electrically, tilts up automatically upon exit, and is leather-trimmed and heated, memory functions for the driver's HVAC and radio settings and for both front seats, and heated front armrests. Also included are the Live Professional Cockpit, multi-color adjustable ambient lighting, automatic dual-zone climate control, an auto-dimming rear-view mirror, a universal garage-door opener, a digital gauge cluster, a 16-speaker Harman Kardon premium audio system, and a suite of driver assists such as adaptive cruise with automatic braking, lane-departure warning, and a color head-up display.
The M850i xDrive has everything mentioned above as standard but is differentiated by its 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine with 523 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque, mated exclusively to xDrive AWD. It has two-tone 20-inch M Double-spoke alloy wheels, a black rear spoiler, M8 door mirrors, an M badge on the grille, and adaptive M Suspension Professional with active roll stabilization. Inside, it gains a single feature - ventilation for the front seats.
On all BMW 8 Series Coupe models, the Active Driving Assistant package can be activated for $100 and includes an active driving assistant with speed-limit info and cross-traffic alert, Parking Assistant Plus, active park-distance control, active blind-spot detection, and a surround-view system. Upgrading to the Driving Assistance Professional package costs $1,700 on top of that and includes all of the above, as well as extended traffic-jam assistance, stop-and-go active cruise control, active lane-keep assistance with side-collision avoidance, front cross-traffic alert, and an evasion aid.
For $800, the M Sport Professional package adds a rear spoiler, black brake calipers, and extended Shadowline trim to the 840i. This package costs $300 on the M850i that already has the rear spoiler and, on this trim, it adds blacked-out M Shadowline headlights too. Only available on the M850i is the $1,550 Cooling and High Performance Tire package that comes with high-performance tires, a mobility kit, and the M Technology package that upgrades the cooling systems of the drivetrain and brakes.
Besides the upgraded interior Full Merino leather, ventilated front seats can be added to the 840i as a standalone option at a cost of $500. The glass iDrive Controller, start/stop button, and gear shifter cost $650, as does the Alcantara headliner. Upgrading to the 1,400-watt 16-speaker Bowers & Wilkins audio system costs $3,400. The rear-axle steering can be added to the RWD 840i for $1,150. If you don't like the Shadowline exterior treatment, replacing it with chrome is a cost-free option.
Only on the M850i, an M Carbon roof can be specified for $3,000. An additional M Carbon Exterior package is more cosmetic in nature and costs $4,100, consisting of M Carbon for the air curtain, front blade, tailpipe finishers, and mirror caps, along with an upgraded diffuser insert. The M850i is also the only trim with access to the classic BMW M 50 Years exterior emblems at a cost of $200.
