Not everyone was thrilled when it was announced that BMW had officially acquired Alpina, the company that has churned out uniquely tuned BMWs that have often been even more special than the German automaker's own M cars. But Alpina as we know and love it won't change immediately, and another exciting arrival is the B4 Gran Coupe. Essentially a high-performance version of the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe, the B4 has been spotted looking virtually production-ready ahead of its imminent unveiling. As there is no BMW M4 Gran Coupe, the B4 won't directly be compared with any BMW M product. Expect Alpina's usual styling flourishes, high-quality interior finishes, and a uniquely tuned chassis that should make the B4 a joy to drive.

Teased in March 2022, it's clear that the B4 will be coming out soon. We expect a reveal in the second quarter of 2023, with the BMW Alpina B4 Gran Coupe's release date following later in the year as a 2024 model. It remains to be seen if the B4 will make it to the USA since the B3 isn't sold here, but we're keeping our fingers crossed.
As the car is yet to be officially launched, we don't know how much the 2023 BMW Alpina B4 Gran Coupe will cost if it is sold here. However, since Alpinas usually command a slight premium over comparable M products, we estimate that the 2024 BMW Alpina B4 Gran Coupe's price will be around $85,000 MSRP if it goes on sale in the US. That's around $6,000 more than the M4 Competition xDrive Coupe. Rivals will include the Audi RS5 Sportback which starts at $76,200.
When it's launched, the BMW Alpina B4 Gran Coupe's exterior will likely be the sportiest iteration of the 4 Series Gran Coupe yet. But as is the case with Alpina, the visual adornments are likely to be more subtle than seen on M cars. Spy shots have shown the B4 with the customary quad-exit exhaust setup, a subtle trunk spoiler, and the Green Metallic paint for which Alpina is well-known. We'd love to see the option of Alpina Blue, too, as offered on the Alpina B8. Other Alpina B4 Gran Coupe colors should be the usual mix of blacks, whites, and grays.
In front, it appears that the new BMW Alpina B4 Gran Coupe sedan has retained a similar grille treatment to that of the regular 4 Series instead of the horizontal bars that make up the M4 Coupe's grille. Alpina badging and the company's distinctive multi-spoke alloy wheels will make an appearance too.
The BMW Alpina B4 Gran Coupe's dimensions should be nearly identical to those of the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe. In M440i form, that car measures 188.5 inches in length, 72.9 inches in width, and 56.8 inches in height. The wheelbase is 112.4 inches.
All signs indicate that the BMW Alpina B4 Gran Coupe's engine will be the same 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six that's found in the B3. In the B3, the engine has been tuned to produce 462 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque. That's much more than the 382-hp output of the M440i Gran Coupe. Paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and the rear-biased all-wheel-drive system, Alpina claims that the B3 will reach 62 mph in 3.8 seconds. Based on that, expect a 0-60 time of about 3.5 seconds. The B4 should closely match these figures with the same specs. We also anticipate the implementation of an Alpina sport exhaust system with a Sport mode that elicits a more evocative exhaust note.
The BMW Alpina B4 Gran Coupe's interior will have the same logical, if rather staid, feel as the regular 4 Series Gran Coupe and 3 Series sedan. Alpina's touches should elevate it inside, though, as can be seen in interior images of the B3 below. While we haven't seen pictures of the B4's cabin, we expect the replacement of the BMW steering wheel roundel with Alpina's own emblem. Ahead of the driver, the digital gauge cluster is likely to use Alpina's unique blue backlighting.
The B3 comes with hand-stitched Lavalina leather on the steering wheel with signature blue/green stitching, Alpina piano black trim inserts, and an instrument panel wrapped in SensaTec. The usual luxuries like navigation and a premium sound system are all likely to extend to the B4. The Alpina B4 Gran Coupe's front seats should be heated and power-adjustable, too. The second row won't be quite as spacious but average-sized adults will be comfortable enough.
If you need to carry the family's paraphernalia, the Alpina B4 Gran Coupe's trunk space shouldn't disappoint. The 4 Series Gran Coupe's trunk measures a decent 16.6 cubic feet; this is a good amount of cargo space for a sporty coupe-style sedan.
