2023 BMW X3 Review: Sedan-Like Sport Activity Fun

BMW has been known for sporty and fun-to-drive sedans, but its range of SUVs has slowly but steadily caught up with its sedans and coupes in terms of delivering driver enjoyment, and the BMW X3 is the perfect example. This compact luxury crossover is basically the SUV version of the much-loved BMW 3 Series and even shares its engines with the sure-footed sedan. The 2023 BMW X3 is powered by your choice of a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder producing 248 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque, or a more assertive turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six with 382 hp. But even with the base engine, our review of the BMW X3 proves the high-rider is more than capable of delivering driving thrills and good performance. And when facing off against premium rivals that bring superior cabin comfort to the fight, the X2 takes on the Volvo XC60. But there are more competitors for the BMW X3 to worry about; the Genesis GV70 is a tough contender, but is it enough to dethrone the X3?

What's the Price of the 2023 BMW X3?

The BMW X3's price starts at an MSRP of $46,200 for the sDrive30i, increasing to $48,200 for the xDrive30i. If the much more powerful M40i is the one you want, it comes in at a price of $61,000. These prices all exclude a destination charge of $995 in the US. Fully loaded with every conceivable option, the BMW X3 will cost over $74k in M40i guise.

2023 BMW X3 Handling and Driving Impressions

When it comes to sporty compact crossovers, the Porsche Macan has become the benchmark, and while the BMW X3 can't entirely match up to it's fellow German, it does come close, offering a drive that feels akin to that of the delightful 3 Series. The X3 is fun to drive; it rotates around corners and sticks to the tarmac with surprising tenacity. The chassis and suspension setup in the base model strikes a glorious balance of responsiveness and comfort, and the X3 never feels too stiff over rough road surfaces. We'd recommend getting the dynamic damper control system that forms part of the Dynamic Handling Package for an even better ride. This suspension system adds Comfort, Sport, and Eco Pro driving modes for an even more supple and intuitive ride. The M40i comes with adaptive M Suspension, which lowers the car by 0.4 inches, and makes it turn in even better, and an M Sport differential is available optionally. The brake feel is good, and you can drive the X3 fast in confidence; the steering feel is on par with the rest of the class.

Verdict: Is The 2023 BMW X3 A Good SUV?

BMW has managed to build a compact SUV that is both practical and fun to drive, which also provides a composed driving experience that is soft and comfortable when it needs to be but sporty and entertaining when you're up for it. Both engine options are punchy and deliver outstanding performance without costing a fortune at the pumps. The X3 will never be an off-road hero, but BMW didn't intend it for that: it's brilliant in the city and on the long road, and, in our opinion, is one of the best products from the marque. The interior may be a bit conservative for some, especially with Volvo competing for top honors and offering the XC60 with a sumptuous yet understated cabin, but it's comfortable, well-put-together, and pleasant to spend time in. At the end of the day, the X3 ticks so many of the boxes that you can't help but call it an all-rounder; and while options may be expensive, any time spent behind the wheel will make it feel worthwhile.

What 2023 BMW X3 Model Should I Buy?

If you can afford it, the X3 M40i is the one to get. It begins at $61k, but that also gets you the more powerful turbocharged six-cylinder. If you can't swing for the M40i, then the X3 xDrive30i should be your next choice over the sDrive RWD variant. Having AWD has endless benefits, especially in rough weather conditions like snow and heavy rain. The additional traction could save you. We also highly recommend opting for the very reasonably priced $1,400 Dynamic Handling Package, which, as previously noted, adds Comfort, Sport, and Eco Pro driving modes. The X3 M, which is covered in a separate review, may be too extreme power- and handling-wise for many. That's why the X3 M40i, complete with the bigger engine, stronger acceleration, and M Sport suspension, is our choice.
