The exterior of the BMW X5 still looks fresh thanks to the 2024 facelift. It's traditionally BMW-chic, with no big love-it-or-hate-it rabbit's-tooth grille to contend with. It's not as swoopy as the X6, but boxy doesn't mean bad if you consider the roomy interior and large trunk. The aggressive new front bumper gets an angular lower maw and silver vertical grille slats on the six-cylinder cars, but a black lower bumper insert and black kidneys with the M badge on the M60i, along with the latter's M Sport body kit, black mirror caps, and dark Shadowline exterior trim. This kit is optional on the 40i cars, making them look nearly identical to the M60i save for the grille, which remains the standard item. Wheels measure 20 inches in diameter on all trims, but various 21- and 22-inch designs are optionally available. All X5s get LED headlights, a panoramic moonroof, a power liftgate, and power-folding side mirrors. An illuminated kidney grille is optional. Upgraded adaptive LED headlights with blue accents are standard on the M60i. At the rear, all the six-cylinder cars get dual exhausts, and the M60i quad exhausts.
The exterior dimensions of the BMW X5 put it in the mid-size class alongside rivals such as the Mercedes GLE and Porsche Cayenne. Common to all X5s are a length of 194.2 inches, a width of 78.9 inches without the mirrors, and a wheelbase of 117.1 inches. Height is 69.5 inches on all trims except the PHEV, which is 69.1 inches tall. Ground clearance is 8.7 inches for the 40i cars and 8.3 inches for the M60i.
The RWD sDrive40i has the lowest curb weight of 4,919 pounds, with the AWD xDrive40i's figure increasing to 4,998 lbs. The M60i weighs 5,355 lbs, and the PHEV xDrive50e is the heaviest of all at 5,573 lbs.

Every trim comes with a power tilting/sliding panoramic moonroof as standard.
All the six-cylinder cars have dual trapezoidal exhausts and the M60i has quad exhaust outlets.
The standard alloy wheels on every X5 trim measure 20 inches in diameter but the style varies by trim. Various larger 21- and 22-inch wheel designs are optionally available.
