The X6 M has a typical BMW front with the usual kidney grille flanked by large LED headlights. A sporty front bumper with massive intakes differentiates the X6 M from the other trims in the range. The side profile changes slightly depending on whether it's sitting on 20- or 21-inch wheels. The indicator lights seem to flow from the wheel arches, giving it a fluid and unique look. Most notable is the trademark sloping roof. At the rear, the large, dominant taillight clusters sit under a minimalist spoiler, and symmetrical quad exhaust pipes complete the look.
The X6 M is based on the X5 platform but is a bit wider and sits slightly lower. It has a length of 193.8 inches, resting on a wheelbase of 115.5 inches, longer by a fraction than both the Mercedes GLE and the Porsche Cayenne. Standing 66.5 inches tall, and with a width of 78.3 inches, the X6 M is on the larger side of the segment, though not as tall as its Merc counterpart. It has a curb weight of 5,185 lbs, significantly heavier than the Porsche, yet slightly less bulky than the GLE. With 8.1 inches of ground clearance, the BMW X6 is one-up on both core rivals.

The X6 M comes in a variety of colors; with Alpine White and Jet Black non-metallics available at no additional cost. The metallic colors available include Donington Grey, Long Beach Blue, Mineral White, Melbourne Red, Carbon Black, Silverstone, and Black Sapphire, which also come at no additional cost. Azurite Black Metallic is the only color that comes at an additional cost of $1,950. Striking colors such as the Melbourne Red and Long Beach Blue do well to follow the X6's M-themed assertiveness.
