2024 XM Interior

The interior of the BMW XM is not nearly as outrageous as the exterior and has a lot in common with the latest crop of BMW, most notably the iDrive 8 BMW Curved Display that incorporates the digital gauge cluster and touchscreen under one curved display, set in a long carbon-fiber trim inlay in the dashboard. The materials are of top quality, with leather, faux suede, and carbon fiber in plentiful supply. There is plenty of space inside, and the second row is dubbed an "M Lounge" by BMW, thanks to the high comfort levels and legroom.

Seating and Interior Space

The front seats of the BMW XM are covered in leather and are comfortable and figure-hugging. There is space for five passengers, but four will be more comfortable, as the center rear seating position is slightly raised and less comfortable than the outboard ones. By dint of sitting on the X7's wheelbase but having no third row, the back seat is very roomy, with a huge 40.3 inches of legroom on offer, just 0.1 inches less than in front. It's just a bit of a shame that the two outboard seats are rather flat and not more sculpted for extra comfort, and to hold the rear-seat passengers more firmly in place. The upside of the flat rear bench is that it's easy to install a child seat. Headroom is an ample 40.4 inches, so there's no shortage of interior space, front or back.

Interior Colors and Materials

There is a list of available interior colors for the BMW XM, in addition to various material choices. Extended Merino leather upholstery with diamond quilting is standard in the XM, and the door panels and dashboard are trimmed in Nappa leather. The standard color is black, but for $1,500, you can get it in a striking Sakhir Orange/Black. Full Merino leather is a $2,500 option in either Silverstone with Vintage Coffee or Deep Lagoon with Vintage Coffee. One of the clues to the XM Label Red's higher price can be seen inside; it comes only with full Merino leather in Fiona Red/Black with red stitching and red "XM" branding on the seats and center dash.

In both trims, the dashboard trim around the curved display is rendered in carbon fiber, but it gains an M Signature weave in the Label Red. Satin-aluminum accents are found around the air vents and center console and on the door panels. There are red highlights in the regular XM, most notably for the steering-mounted M buttons and on the shifter knob. The Label Red also gets red accenting on the air vents. The seatbelts are black and are edged in the BMW Motorsport colors. The headliner is trimmed in faux suede with a geometric pattern and features fiber-optic lighting. Naturally, the heated three-spoke steering wheel is leather-trimmed as well.

2024 XM Trunk and Cargo Space

The BMW XM's trunk space is disappointingly small for such a large SUV with only two seating rows, probably due to the under-floor battery pack. The trunk volume behind the second row is only 18.61 cu-ft, compared to the 33.9 cu-ft available in an X5. Folding down the rear seats liberates a more useful 64.27 cu-ft, but the load floor is high. Things are a bit better in the cabin, where the XM provides a lidded center-console storage compartment, a glovebox, and big door pockets in all doors. The heated and cooled twin front cupholders and wireless charging pad can be hidden under a retractable door. The rear-seat passengers are provided with their own cupholders in the fold-down center armrest.

2024 XM Infotainment and Features

Features

The XM comes fully loaded from the factory with nearly all the features in BMW's catalog. It has 23-inch wheels, all-LED exterior lighting, and keyless go, but the power liftgate is not motion-activated, and there is no sunroof. Inside, the seats, dashboard, and door panels are covered in leather, the front seats boast power adjustment, heating, ventilation, and massage functions. The rear seats are heated, and both the armrests and leather-trimmed steering wheel are heated, the latter with power adjustment to boot. Along with all that, you get heated and cooled cupholders, four-zone climate control, and a full suite of driver assists that includes adaptive cruise control, a surround-view camera, blind-spot and lane-keep systems, and traffic-light recognition. As it already comes fully equipped with all the luxury and M-specific features, very few options are available.

Infotainment

The infotainment system is the latest iDrive 8-based BMW Curved Display, which houses a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster and a 14.9-inch touchscreen side by side under a single curved glass panel. The system in the XM has an M-specific design and can be updated over the air. It comes with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, voice commands, gesture control, Wi-Fi, a head-up display, navigation, satellite radio, the My BMW app with remote functions, a wireless charging pad, and a 16-speaker Harman Kardon audio system. A 20-speaker Bowers & Wilkins audio system is optionally available.
